Udupi, Jan 12: As the BJP has secured 16 of the total 25 seats in the zilla panchayat (ZP) here, there are no doubts about the fact that one of its elected members will get the post of the ZP president. The presidentship of ZP has been reserved to backward category ‘A”, while the post of the vice president has been earmarked for woman candidate from general category.

Katpady Shankar Poojary, Upendra Nayak, Ganapati T, Prakash Mendon, and Udaya S Kotian are eligible to contest for the post. Out of them, Shankar Poojary and Upendra Nayak are backed by the experience of having worked as the zilla panchayat members in the past. Upendra Nayak has an in-depth experience in both administration and organization. Although Prakash Mendon from Basrur and Ganapati T from Koteshwar are also in circulation for this post, it is felt that they may not get the party nod.

The choice is now between Shankar Poojary and Upendra Nayak. Poojary’s name is in the forefront, and in all likelihood, he will be the next president of Udupi ZP.
