Mangaluru: Sarojini Shetty, Chandrahas Suvarna bag Nataka Academy awards

Mangaluru, Mar 11: Well-known artiste of Tulu theatre, Sarojini Shetty from Shaktinagar here has been chosen for the prestigious Karnataka Nataka Academy's annual Rangaprashasti award for the year 2021.

Sarojini had acted in various drama troupes including Sri Ganesha Nataka Sabha, Cha Parka Kalavidaru and Sri Lalita Kalavidaru Mangaluru. She has acted in over 2,500 plays some of which are Veerarani Abbakka, Kittur Rani Chennamma, Belawadi Mallamma, Kateeldappe Ullaldi, Bangar Bale, Bayyamallike etc. She also has acted in over 14 Tulu movies some of which are Tulunada Siri, Bangar Patler, Sangama Sakshi, Bollidota and Dareda Seere. She was also seen in the small screen, having acted in TV series like Barauda Bandasale and Irulu.

Sarojini Shetty has been honoured with the titles, 'Abhinaya Abhinetri' and 'Ranga Sharade'. She has won a number of awards including Udayavani Vimshati award in1 990, district Rajyotsava award etc.

Chandrahas Suvarna from Karkala taluk, who has been serving the field of Tulu theatre through 'Karkala Kalaranga' group for the last 41 years, has won Karnataka Nataka Academy Yuva Rangaprashasti for the year 2021.

Suvarna has also been organizing drama competitions once in five years, and ten-day drama festival among others. He said that he has been organizing plays at various venues through drama troupes. He entered the field of theatre through an artiste, Shekhar Bhandary. He has been identifying and encouraging young artistes and holding training workshops for them.
