Mangalore : 'Kreedotsava' Registration Evoking Thunderous Response

Mangalore, Jan 21: Sri Bhootanatheshwara Kreedotsava has got off to a flying start as large number of sportsmen and sports teams have flocked to Yedapadav to register in the village sports meet. The organizers have received applications from all corners of Tulunadu, from places such as Kundapur, Udupi, Hebri, Bengare, Kasargod, Moodabidri, Karkala, Mudipu, Mangalore and Kasargod. More registrations are expected to take place in coming few days.

The organizers have also invited the famous Bharatanatyam artiste Shobhana to present a classical dance performance during the Kreedotsava. Shobhana is the niece of the legendary classical dancers the Travancore sisters and is a disciple of the renowned dancer Chitra Visweswaran. She has won the National Award for best actress of the year 1994 and Padmashri from the President of India in 2007. Her performance scheduled for Sunday 13th February 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.


“We are heartened to note that we have received applications from people as old as 48 and 50 years for the Tug of War contest. For the cycle race, one enthusiastic cyclist came all the way from Mangalore traveling 65 kms in a bicycle,” says Sri Mundabettu Vijaynath Shetty, who is the chief co-ordinator of the event.

“However, we wish people took more interest in the traditional village events like Rice Mudi Making, Best Looking Kori, Best Decorated Cow, Coconut Leaf Weaving etc. As the objective of this Kreedotsava is to revive traditional culture and bring the rural community together, we appeal to all the rural folk to participate in all the 21 events of the Kreedotsava.”

Sri Bhootanatheshwara Kreedotsava will be held on 12th & 13th February 2011 under the auspices of Shasthavu Sri Bhootanatheshwara Temple and Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Bhajana Mandali, Badaga Yedapadavu, Mijar, Mangalore Taluk. Competitions in 21 village games will be conducted and Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be given to the winners in addition to the attractive prize money like Rs. 25000 for Cycle Race, Rs. 15000 for Tug Of War (Group) and Rs. 5000 for best decorated cow and Rs. 3000 for best looking Kori etc.

The competitions cover all categories like solo and group, male, female, children and senior citizens. Tug of War (Hagga Jaggata), Mud Field Running Race (Kesarugadde Ota), Treasure Hunt in Mud Field, Coconut Basket Race, Dehusking Coconut With Teeth, Frog Jumping (Gunny Bag Race), and Cycle Racing (30 kms) are some of the interesting games being conducted. Other talents being tested are Beedi Rolling, Weaving Coconut Leaf design, Rice Packing (Mudi), Rangoli, Drawing and Fancy Dress. Fancy Dress and Natural Body Building (unlike professional body building) too will be judged. As a tribute to the agricultural tradition of this region, best decorated cow and best looking Kori contest too will take place.

A special attraction is ‘Manassuda Ullasogu Bodad Anchinala Malpuva’, which is a talent show, where any individual or group having a special talent in any field should come and perform in front of the judges, similar to the Sony TV programme ‘Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’. The prize money for this event is Rs. 20,000.

Though the event is organized by a temple, people of all castes, communities and religions are welcome to participate in the true spirit of brotherhood, communal harmony and national integration.
