Udupi, Jan 28: Five students, who face charges of waylaying and assaulting an engineering student from Manipal named Amit Makkal, as well as robbing of Rs 1,000 from him, and then drawing Rs 18,000 from his account after forcing him to part with his ATM card and PIN, have been arrested by the policemen. The robbery had taken place at Hoigekudru in Perampally near here on January 22.

When Amit was moving in a car along with a female friend, a gang of youth had stopped him and assaulted him at Hoigekudru. Apart from snatching cash in Amit’s possession, the gang had drawn money from his account through an ATM centre in Santekatte, before returning the ATM card to him.

Manipal policemen, with whom a case was registered, have arrested Prajwal Saldanha (22), a native of Kolalalgiri, Uppoor, and student of Global Technology, Ravindra (22) from Sastan, a student of Fire and Safety Engineering College, Gautam Poojary (21) from Moodutonse, a final year diploma student in Manipal, Chetan Poojary (19) from Moodutonse Moodabettu, second year B Com student of Kallianpur Milagres College, and Dhanush (17), from Jangamarabettu, a first PUC student of Kallianpur Milagres College. The policemen have also recovered Rs 19,000 from their possession.

Three of them were arrested from Kallianpur, and two from Santekatte, on Thursday morning. On producing them in a court here, they were remanded to judicial custody.

Manipal police inspector, H D Kulkarni, district superintendent of police, Pravin Madhukar Pawar, additional superintendent of police, Venkateshappa, and deputy superintendent of police, Jayant V Shetty, had guided the operation.
