Mangaluru, Apr 24: An 80-year-old woman surprised everyone by donating Rs 1 lac, which she accumulated through begging, to Polali temple.

Ashwathamma, a resident of Kanchigoodu near Gangolli of Kundapur taluk, is the woman who donated the amount to renowned Polali Sri Rajarajeshwari temple. She got this money by begging at the steps of the Polali temple itself. Now she has donated this for the Annadana programme of the temple.

Ashwathamma wears Lord Aiyappa garland most of the time throughout the year. Though she has poverty in her family, she is not worried about it. She always thinks of God and prays a lot.

Executive officer of the temple P Jayamma, chief priest of the temple Madhav Bhat along with the others prayed especially for Ashwathamma on Friday, April 22, when she offered Rs 1 lac for the Annadana programme.

Devotees of the temple have highly appreciated the noble work of Ashwathamma at this elderly age.

It is a noble act from the woman. But I feel the temple members shouldnt have received her money ,instead give it to her family who lives in Powerty.I think this is the second woman who donates the money to the temple in lacs by begging.looks like begging is better than working ?Even she could have donated to her own family members.what will she do in her olden days ?Anyway it was her wish .

Begging used to be a noble profession (with fine prints attached). At the age of 80, she has lived the philosophy of "Kereya neeranu Kerege Chelli". Over the past couple of years, we have witnessed many well to do who lost their lives in the prime. Age is not just another number anymore, but a privilege, even if you want to be at the service of God here. Plenty of take away message from Ashwathamma's act.

"Better a beggar than a thief.” She could have distributed the sum to those who are living in deplorable living conditions and she would have blessed directly from the Lord. (My wish and not to contradict her act.)
