It is incorrect to 'paint all Christian schools with Bible colour': Archbishop

Bengaluru, Apr 28 (IANS): Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Bengaluru Peter Machado said on Thursday that it is not good to give "Bible colour" to all Christian schools in the state.

Responding to the controversy over the Clarence High School in connection with making Bible compulsory for all students, the archbishop stated it is not possible to separate religion and morality. Clarence High School has a history of 100 years.

He further stated that the 75 per cent of the children studying in the school follow Christianity. It is incorrect to charge that the Bible is made compulsory of all students. It is not mandatory for students belonging to Hindu and Muslim communities.

"It is not correct to paint all Christian schools with Bible colour. If the government wants to investigate the matter, let them conduct an inquiry. Let them find out how many children have been converted," he said.

First Churches were targetted, later they were attacked and destroyed. "Now they have focused on our educational institutions. Former Vice-President L.K. Advani had stated that he studied in a Christian school. Likewise, Union Minister Piyush Goel also studied in a Christian institution. The Christian education institutions have given many dignitaries to the society, the Archbishop said.

A complaint was filed by a Hindu group alleginging that Bible reading is made compulsory for all students and admission is being denied if the consent is not given for students to undergo preaching of Christian religious matters.

Education Minister B.C. Nagesh has also reacted sharply to the issue and stated that he has sent a notice to the school regarding making Bible compulsory. The Department of Education has also given a direction for the Block Education Officers (BEO) to inspect all the Christian institutions in the state regarding the issue of making reading of Bible compulsory for schoolchildren.

I am born and brought up in Karnataka. I did my education in Karnataka. No one has imposed or forced us to study or attend any catechism or Bible study in schools. Yes, my classmates used to go for catechism classes and we used to have a moral science period. No one had any issue, not any parents. We were all growing up like one family, we had many nuns as students, who were very friendly with us, and still, we are friends. They were many poor students who could not pay their fees too. From the day I joined this convent school till today I have not heard any conversation/ not forced anyone to follow their Christianity in school. We were celebrating all religious festivals during our Assembly time. No shame to say, why are these political sub-parties targeting minorities. Have some proof then target. Have strong faith in your religion first in all your difficulties or happy moments. No one can be forced to convert to any religion.

Apart from the syllabus they teach - Love your neighbour, forgive your enemy, do not kill, do not steal, respect your father and mother, do not covet others'possessions etc...... These are universal values. Looks like immoral and corrupt people do not want their children to learn these values.

Many of us who studied in christian schools and we know that nobody told us or taught us or forced us to read Bible. We know this is all a big game played by people who just want to create disturbance and profit from it Yet most of us don't speak out against it.. If we support these groups of people by remaining silent one fine day they will turn on their own people with their divisive ideology. Even in countries like Syria, Afghanistan ,the moderate majority was silent when certain groups were gaining strength. But you can see what happened now to these countries.

@Mohan Prabhu, be it pre independence or post independence, the fact that you are still practising the faith of your birth / choice , means you are not converted, now to quote your statement that minority releigions distribute bibles and quorans to increase their numbers is absurd - if that were the case you would have been a minority, that said, you studied in the prestigious SAC, but your mindset doesn’t show the good values you learned at SAC - please understand the polarisation that is ruining the nation with these petty issues that have resulted because of total failure in proper governance, don’t be surprised if Indian goes the Sri Lanka way.

Dear Archbishop, it is not ethical to teach bible to non-Christians during school hours. We also had bible classes every Thursday during my elementary school days but non Christians were not involved. In fact those who studied in Christian schools know very well the ethic followed in Christian schools......But after 2014 people started all this nuisance without any base.

Agree. Bible study in schools have nothing to do with it. To those who criticized my comment, you should know that a book is not to be judged by its cover. I attended SAC, Mangalore in the pre- Independence years because it was a Catholic school. All my ancestors who fled Goa were converted to Christianity in the 18th century and I am still a practising catholic, despite your first-hand judgement from my name.

While it is not correct to paint all Christian schools with bible colour, it is also not correct to make bible compulsory even for catholic or other christian students in schools. Bible study must be confined to churches in catechism classes, not in schools imparting education. Are they becoming madrasas? I have never heard of bible classes during the days I was at St. Aloysius College in Mangalore; that was pre-Independence. Perhaps the Indian Constitution has given too much freedom of religion to propagate the faith. Propagation, not professing, leads to conflicts. Minority religions endeavour to increase their number by propagating and handing over bibles and Quarans. It is time that the Educational authorities examine the courses taught in schools under their jurisdiction.

No Christian schools do Bible study during class hours they do it during catechism class which is on sundays. I also studied in Christian institute. Do you have anything to say about govt officially trying to impose Bhagavad Gita in all schools private and public during regular class hours. Recently even education minister Nagesh did not mention about Baghavad Gita while he mentioned clearly about no inclusion of Bible and Quran in school syllabus?. You putting words in Christian’s mouth being a fake Canadian return.

Sir, catholic students are also taught catechism in christian schools. But, this book is thin ..not like other subjects. Children are taught good morals through some stories or examples through this book. This is not Bible. Some teachings must have been extracted to teach the moral values. But, CATECHISM classes strictly for Christians. Even our students belonging to other Christian faith are not attending this CATECHISM class. Rest of the students are taught moral science...till puc. In degree no CATECHISM no MORAL SCIENCE...all together are taught "value education". But, no Christian management ask children to carry bible to school everyday. Church CATECHISM book differs from the school one. Bible is a holy book....Even churches dont force children to carry holy book. Holy book doesn't say to do wrong others. Main teaching is love one another as you love yourself. It doesn't contain any controversies like these politicians do have...!!

Dear Ronnie Pinto: I know all about the Roman Catholic School Board. at least in Ottawa where I have lived now for 49 of 57 years - 50 of them as a Canadian citizen. Probably even before you were born, and am still living in Ottawa. My wife taught in the Separate School Board (RC) from 1976 until 2003 in Ottawa itself and she taught elementary school children from Grade 2 to 5 and in the last ten years she was an Education Counsellor. In primary school (Thomas D'Arcy McGee) she was responsible to prepare children for the First Holy Communion and Confession for several years. All the children were Catholics, no Hindus or Muslims. My wife and I are Catholics emigrated in 1965 from Bombay And I taught as a law professor for the first seven years (until 1972) in Saskatchewan and Alberta, prior to that had a fellowship at Columbia University Law School in New York and prior to that was a teaching fellow at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto. I joined the Federal Civil Service in 1973 and retired after 25 years service as a senior attorney. I am a member of four different Law Societies -Maharashtra (1964), Lincoln's Inn Barrister-at-law, London (England), Saskatchewan and Ontario. And I have the rank of Queen's Counsel (1990). In addition I was from time to time a lecturer at the Ottawa University Law School. I have a Doctorate of Laws from Ottawa University which I did by attending full time classes during my retirement. Our children went to Catholic Schools in Ottawa and Public School in High School, one graduated in law from University of Toronto, another in Medicine from the University of Texas A.&M, Houston and the middle child from McGill in Montreal and the University of Cambridge, UK. Two of the three were born and brought up in Canada, and the eldest was born in the United States. So, I know what I am talking about. And you do not have to give me a lecture.

Now the heat is on towards Christian community. I repeatedly say, all minorities are target by this fascists rulers. Unless all minorities don't unite and strategies things to fight for their rights things will never change. Isolated fight such as I will only speak if my community is attacked etc thinking will not yield any result. Any atrocities towards any community has to be protested with strong voice coz India is a country of all faith and none can dominate here on others and have to live amicably with peace.
