Karkala, Apr 30: A bug resembling the face of a human being is found in a palm grove near Karkala bypass in the district.
From a distance it seems like the artwork of human face with a Makmal hat, two eyes and Charlie Chaplin style moustache below the huge nose. These bugs are seen in coastal areas of south Asian countries including India. They are red, yellow, orange and brown in colour and seen mostly from 7 am to 8 am when the sun just rises.
These insects are mostly seen from February to May. They suck the juice from the root and fruit. The Man Faced bug that loiters in the branches of palm tree is a harmless insect. The female is slightly larger than the male in size.
These insects lay eggs in groups and live only from 25 to 30 days. Their life is longer if the climate is cooler. Scientific name of this insect is Catacanthus Incarnatus. Its mouth is like a pipe. It belongs to the Pentatomidae species and is an interesting subject of study for children and entomologists.
