Udupi: Death of tourists at St Mary’s Island – Stress on safety measures

Udupi, May 1: A meeting was held to increase the safety and security at St Mary’s Island near Malpe in the wake of deaths of five tourists at the tourist spot recently.

In the meeting headed by DC Kurma Rao and MLA K Raghupati Bhat it was decided to take maximum safety measures to ensure the lives of tourists. Tourist boat owners and Malpe Beach maintenance team were instructed on the same during the discussion.

Retainer fence needs to be installed in order to prevent tourists from getting into the water. Warning sign boards need to be placed in critical areas. Selfie points to be identified within the island to prevent tourists from getting into water to take selfies.

It was also decided to nominate tourist guides and increase security personnel on the island.

Additional DC Veena, executive engineer of city municipality Yashwanth Prabhu, boat owners and Malpe beach maintenance team were present.
