MCC Qatar announces 'Global Baila Dance' contest for Mangalureans

Doha, May 2: Amidst the numerous associations founded and run by Mangalureans all around the world, one such association which has not only become identity of Mangalureans but has also played its role in preserving, promoting and enhancing the culture, language and traditions of Mangaloreans in the State of Qatar, the jewel of the Arab world is the Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC).

As MCC is completing 30 fruitful and successful years of its existence, it would not be an exaggeration to state that MCC has been Mangalureans’ identity in Qatar. It is in and through MCC that Mangalurean expats in Qatar have discovered their own identity, spotted their talents, exhibited them for the good of the community. MCC is a perfect ‘home away from home’ wherein everyone is duly reached out, taken care and made feel at home.

The inauguration of this milestone year celebrations started with MCC Global Konkani Comedy Challenge hosted on a virtual platform this year from February 2022. Many teams from all over the world participated in this competition which was telecasted on every Sunday at 5.30 pm Qatar time on MCC Qatar YouTube channel till April 2022.

In the series of events planned for this milestone year celebrations, MCC now organizes another exciting and challenging first ever “Global Baila Dance” competition for all dance lovers spread around the globe. MCC as always takes a leap ahead in planning and entertaining the global audience and this is the evidence of organizing global events after “Soad 3 International” singing reality show, “Gulf Baila Naach” contest organized for GCC countries, “MCC Global Comedy Challenge” online contest in the pandemic period.

“Global Baila Dance” is a Baila dance video challenge contest organized in association with premier organization “Mandd Sobhann”. This contest is open to all who are 15 years of age and above without any religion or region or language bar but perform only on Konkani songs. This contest will be a Mixed Duet contest for both males and females in a duet performance. It will be telecasted on Daijiworld TV, 24x7 channel and webcast on MCC Qatar’s YouTube channel and on Facebook page.

The contest will be held in three phases:

1. In the first round, out of the total entries received, 24 videos will be selected for broadcast and telecast. Out of these, 12 couples will be promoted to the semi-final round.

2. Semi-final Round – The 12 selected couples will have to video record a dance to a new song and send. Of these, 6 couples will be promoted to the final round.

3. These 6 couples will have to record again a dance to another song and send their entry for the final phase.

Out of these 6 couples, the best will be declared the winner and will receive the title – ‘Global Baila King’ and ‘Global Baila Queen’. They will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

The first runners-up will receive a cash prize of Rs. 50,000.

The second runners-up will receive a cash prize of Rs. 25,000.

As this is a video contest, the contestants, in their own interest, must ensure good quality video recording (at their own expense). Only the finally edited version maybe sent.

The song/songs selected for the video challenge must be in Konkani (of any dialect), and songs of any other language will not be permitted.

The duration of the video should be a minimum of 3 minutes 30 seconds and not exceeding 5 minutes.

One may select a single song or a mix of two songs. However, the following must be strictly adhered to:

1. Obtaining the permission of the composer, to video-record the song, is the responsibility of the contestants.

2. Care must be taken to wear the correct, traditional costumes and also relevant ornaments. If you have any doubts regarding the same, kindly clarify the same with Mandd Sobhann’s Dance Director – Rahul Pinto (85533 57578). Any video without the correct costumes and ornaments will not receive serious consideration.

3. Dancers must make an earnest effort to learn and dance the correct steps and moves of Baila and absolutely avoid mixing filmy, tapori, western or any other moves into the dancing. All in all, the Video – through the costumes, the ornaments and through the moves and steps -should truly reflect and project Konkani’s traditional dance-form.

The Awards Ceremony will be conducted in the month of January 2023.

Registration Details

1. Registration google form can be filled through the below link and is also available on MCC Qatar YouTube Channel and Daijiworld.

2. The last date to ‘register’ is May 31, 2022.

3. The last date to ‘Submit the video’ is June 30, 2022. The videos should be submitted in the MP4 format only, along with the prescribed application.

4. Before you begin practicing, please send us the song along with your registration to mccbailachallenge@gmail.com email or WhatsApp (+971 85533 57578). Only after getting an approval from us (via email/WhatsApp), one may proceed with dance practice. This is done only to avoid the same song being recorded by more than one and to ensure whether it’s technically in order. It is first-come-first-served for the song selection. Hence, registration has to be at the earliest to get a song of one’s choice.
