Mangaluru: Coronavirus effect – Demand for beer dips, sales plummet

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, May 4: Beer lovers of the coastal region, who were generally used to crowd the wine shops and bars to have chilled beer during rising mercury, seem to be not too interested this year.

Compared to last year, the sale of beer this year has plummeted. According to details available, from January to March 2022, only 5,27,391 boxes of beer have been sold. For the corresponding period the sale in 2021, it was 5,68,637. This means a deficit of 41,246 boxes.

According to assistant commissioner of excise of Dakshina Kannada, Bindushree P, there is no activeness in the tourism sector in the district of Dakshina Kannada which is the main reason for the downfall.

Manager of a wineshop says that after Covid-19 pandemic many people have given up drinking beer and hard liquor. Public feels that consumption of beer causes cold that may lead to coronavirus.

Compared to pre-Covid times, meetings and functions have also reduced a lot. This is also the reason for a reduction in beer sales. After coronavirus, many people have lost jobs and are continuing to face financial hardships which have also affected the sale of beer and other liquor. There is no demand for special permit of CL-5 which is required for functions to supply liquor.

These are also contributing factors for the reduction in sale of beer.

The decrease is less than 8%. really not convincing. It does not indicate the society is becoming healthier. May be the the drug menace has taken over this 8%.

Beer rates are too high in Karnataka... Light beer is a very refreshing drink and comparable to any natural drink... People who do not drink beer may continue to enjoy sugar cane juice or tender coconut... But light beer also should cost same like any other soft drink... Government may increase tax on unnatural strong beers which are worse than hard liquor...

While advocating drinking in moderation -- -- It is signs of how bad the state of affairs are -- Generally People drink after a Good day of meaningful work/ success in business -- functions -- etc -- and relax -- ( maybe a few out of frustration -- or another set --who can anyway afford --)-- Many businesses shut or on verge -- commodities up -- inflation going up -- The GOVT however is Oblivious -- Day to day only news -- or headlines -- Police exams racket -- other exams -- paper leaked -- Commissions etc --- Only bluster -- 5 trillion economy-- next 2 or 3 years--

A decent bottle of 650 ml beer costs upwards of Rs. 200/- on a hot summer afternoon 2 bottles of beer will set me back by nearly Rs. 400/- that’s if I have it at home, same stuff if I’m to have in the club or a good hotel will set me back by a couple of hundreds, plus the snacks etc. if Government which survives on EXCISE revenue wants to rake in the moolah - they have to reduce the excise duty on beer which is less harmful than cheap hard liquor .... tropical countries in summer beer is best....

Cynthia, yes, thank you. It is a perfect Economics formula. I do not drink beer or any of the alcoholic stuff. None of that is necessary. In actual fact, it harms not only the health of the drinker, but it destroys the family. About a year ago, a known person under 25, who was drinking a lot of this stuff, had a liver issue. Hopefully he has fully recovered.

I salute you for this comment. 🙌...not only that boy there are so many around who have lost their precious life due to alcohol either because of liver/kidney failure or murders....Many families have separated because of this devil. Many families have come on the road....Children spoilt their lives by observing their parents and what not.....In conclusio, i agree with one priest who delivered sermon during one of the retreats that ALCOHOL IS NOTHING BUT DEVILS URINE....AND PEOPLE PAY FOR IT AND CREATE DISASTER AND RUIN THE FAMILIES......Keep it up ...stay blessed 🙌🙌
