Mangaluru: Nitte Institute of Architecture - Carving a bright future

Media Release

Mangaluru, May 6: Nitte Institute of Architecture (NIA), Mangaluru was established in 2015, as a constituent college of Nitte Deemed to be University (DU), one of the premier universities in Karnataka. The university has been accredited with an A+ grade by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) and is ranked amongst the top 100 universities in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and top 450 universities in Asia by the QS World University Rankings.

In the spirit of the National Education Policy, Nitte DU is rapidly growing into an interdisciplinary center where students and educators from various fields learn from each other, and collaborate to tackle some of the most important issues of the present and future. Ever since its inception, Nitte DU has reached out and worked with local and regional communities to better people's lives.

In the same philanthropic spirit, in order to make architectural education accessible to all, Nitte DU has announced excellence scholarships in Architecture, for students based on their academic performance and aptitude in architecture. NIA will now offer a full tuition fee waiver for the top three students, and 65% concession in tuition fee to five students, as a part of this new scholarship scheme. This is in addition to the existing university-wide scholarships to meritorious students.

Architecture, as a profession, is ever changing and evolving. It is a blend of creative freedom, personal expression and technical awareness. It is creative in terms of design & aesthetics; and technical in terms of the process of construction. An architect takes on different roles in the various stages of the design & construction process, experiencing the best of both worlds. Architecture is a unique profession that provides its students with a global perspective, and allows them to follow their passion, by providing a wide range of employment options, from entrepreneurship and private practice, to urban design and allied design fields such as product and graphic design.

Nitte DU has identified architecture as one of the key domains that contributes to the building of this great nation. As a developing country, both rural and urban India are witnessing unprecedented growth and require trained design professionals. Continued rapid urbanization has led the government to allocate a major part of the nation's GDP in the infrastructure segment. As per the 2010 McKinsey report, it is estimated that rapid urbanization in India will require the construction of 700 to 900 million square meters of commercial and residential space, or 'a new Chicago every year'. This implies that about 70 to 80 percent of the India of 2030, is yet to be built. Furthermore, the union government allocated upwards of 100 lakh crore rupees for national infrastructure development in the financial year 2020-21. It is estimated that by 2024-25, the infrastructure sector is slated to be one of the greatest growth catalysts of all time.

The first step to a career in architecture is a BArch or Bachelor in Architecture. NIA offers a 5-year Bachelor in Architecture programme that is approved by the Council of Architecture (CoA) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The progressive curriculum at NIA was developed by academic and professional entities from around the world and has been designed to integrate hands-on practical training with theory-based education. Design excellence is encouraged through rigorous theoretical training, experiential learning, critical thinking, innovative pedagogy, craft and skill-building, dialogue and collaboration. The programme hopes to lead a new generation of holistic professionals that work with a deeper understanding of architecture by bringing together meaningful insights of experiential learning from both academia and professional practice.

The institute has been envisioned as a centre for excellence in tropical architecture with partners across the globe and plans to offer undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in architecture, urban studies and design.
