Udupi, Feb 17:
The people residing in Bavali Kudru (Island of Bats) which is situated in the middle of river Sita, Neelavar here have demanded state government to build a bridge connecting the mainland.

‘It’s not an easy task to live in this island. One has to be brave enough to face the nature’s challenges.  The residents here are trying to live along with daily struggles.  The Sitanadi, rivulet that flows in the vicinity poses them greater obstacles for daily survival.

Bavali Kudru derived its name from the bat colony that prevailed few decades ago. Now there are no more bats in the region due to the felling of trees that sheltered them for centuries.

This beautiful island is a classic example of remote village that resembles the state of pre-Independence era.  The people live here since five generations.

Bavalikudru lies in a radius of 100 kilometers.  The paddy, palm, areca and other commercial crops including sugarcane are grown in the island.  The vegetables grow abundantly and are a main source of income for the islanders.  The islanders constitute about 30 Christian joint families.

The Adversity of Monsoon Season

The residents of Bavali Kudru need to stay indoors during the entire monsoon season as the rising waters in the Sitanadi inundate large part of landmass.  It’s the time even the expert of boatmen find it difficult to venture into flood waters even to ferry the schoolchildren and other residents.

The new generations of islanders are migrating to other regions where they can find gainful employment, while there are a few brave determined islanders continue to live despite struggle for daily living.  The islanders also face acute shortage of drinking water in spite Sitanadi flows in the vicinity.  They depend on wells for fetching drinking water.

Although the island has transmission lines of both electricity and telecommunications, the break-down rates are quite high.  The response from technical assistants is very poor, since they try not to dare the nature’s obstacles in reaching the island.

The people’s representatives come to Bavali Kudru seeking votes whenever there are general elections and assembly polls and offer assurances of building a bridge linking the island with the mainland and the issue is forgotten later.

The engineering department of ZP has prepared a blue-print for laying a bridge in Bavali Kurdru at an estimated cost of Rs 33 lac.  Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes has already released Rs 15 lac from his union funds for constructing the bridge.  Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat has been trying to set-off the shortfall of Rs 13 lac out of Natural Calamities Fund in this regard.  This issue has been referred to deputy commissioner for the speedy commencement of construction works.

It is really sad news. Why our political parties {Both Congress and BJP} are silent in these types of issues. Many years Congress was ruling and they did nothing. Now almost from past 15 years BJP is ruling and they too same way. I think our political leaders are just like dumb buffalos. Some one must beat them up, to put in the proper track. Hope our young generation will do this job pretty soon.

Very nice serene place, used spend summer there during my childhood... seen many millions of bats, gone fishing many times... I guess residents of Bavali kudru should determine whether they want the bridge or not. Residents face lot of difficulty/unsafe to commute specially during monsoon season... Nice to see the pics on Daiji and thanks for publishing article on this Iceland

Your are right Vishal. Only the people of Neelavara know the real problem. They face a gard time during monsoons and follds. Politicians vist only during elections, otherwise we are forgotten. I hope authorities take note of this issue and do something about it.Thank you daijiworld.

Thanks Daiji for the nice pics & exposing some reality and the injustice done the people of the Island by the Govt. The petition for a bridge has been forwarded to the Govt around 2 decades ago. I have been hearing this unending story form past 15-20 and the end result is –NOTHING IS HAPPENING. Some people try to reach the Govt. authorities, but all the efforts go in vain & waste of time. Even now I am not sure when this long awaited dream will be actualized. For Oscar Fernandes to release that 15 lac it has taken more than 15 years which is ridiculous.

We do not understand whom to blame? Govt. Authorities or Politician who promises every thing before the vote and disappear once the vote is over. Above that I am not sure how much it’s going to help by publishing an article on Daiji. Will this article catch the sight of any Govt officials or Politician? We are just waiting for the long awaited dream to be actualized. Though the young generation has flown away for work & study purposes, however we can’t leave this place permanently as we are emotionally attached to this place.

Patrick, As you said it’s really beautiful place. To visit this place it’s quite easy. I assume that you know  how to reach Brahmavar once you reach Brahmavar, there are buses which drive you to Neelavar from Brahmavar as you get down from the bus in Neelavar if you ask any one the way to reach Bavali kudru, I am sure any one can guide you from there. Other than this, from Brahmavar you can even take an auto and reach the destiny. Cheers n Good Luck !

Dear Friends - if you can bear a bit of difficulty, plese avoid the bridge. The bridge will destroy the beauty of your land all kinds of vehicles will pollute you and your children will have to pay for the advancement. You are living in paradise we are in hell

Mr.Feddrick is right. What a beutiful & serene place. Since childhood I am obsessed to live in an island like this.

Frankly, any property for sale? not for Resort but for dwelling & farming.

Yes. Bridge is a must but one must take care not to disturb this environmental gem and I request residents to keep this mode of transport alive as it is so romantic & peacefull.

Wow! what a beautiful island. Thank you Daijiworld/Mr. Padubidri for bringing beautiful greenary to light.
Why can't the Govt. start the work at least at the moment, shortfall can be on the way of progress of construction then. I wish all the best to all the Islanders for daring the living in such dangers and difficulties.
