Mangaluru, May 7: Police arrested Ashok Kumar (47) and Reshma Vasudev Nayak (36), both residents of Udupi on the accusation of cheating more than Rs 60 lac by creating fake document of land deal of an elderly woman.

Christine Edwin Joseph Gonsalves (84), a native of Bengaluru, presently residing at Bajpe, is the victim who was fleeced by the duo.

Christine owns 77 cents land at Moodutonse village of Udupi district. Ashok Kumar and Reshma told Rama Poojary, who is known to them, of their interest to buy the land of Christine. A sale deed was done. The duo gave Rs 30 lac as advance. They allegedly said that the rest amount will be paid within six months and the deed will be registered.

Later, the duo said that they have shortage of funds and asked Christine to get the 40 cents registered for which they have paid Rs 30 lac and they will buy the remaining 37 cents of land later. However, the duo cheated elderly Christine and got the sale deed done for all the 77 cents of land instead of 40 cents. It came to light that they have prepared various fake documents in this connection. In addition, the cheque for Rs 30 lac which the duo gave also got bounced.

Christine Edwin had filed a complaint in this connection with Cyber and economic crimes cell of city.

“The more people rationalize cheating, the more it becomes a culture of dishonesty. And that can become a vicious, downward cycle. Because suddenly, if everyone else is cheating, you feel a need to cheat, too.” This is a gift from Indian Politicians...Especially who is ruling now...

If names were minority your comment would have been .....price rise, inflation, minority harassment, targeted, blah blah blah. Any crime should be dealt with law of the land and they should be punished.

Human greed is unlimited at times... They go to any extent knowing fully well that they are just cats drinking milk with closed eyes... My late mother was also cheated by a characterless lawyer in Udupi who went on to cheat several others including poor SC family for which he is now convicted and jailed... But my old mother died out of the trauma indicted... KARMA haunts and finally prevails....
