Former minister B J Puttaswamy embraces 'sanyas', becomes Poornanandapuri Swami

Bengaluru, May 7 (IANS): Bidding goodbye to worldly affairs, senior Karnataka BJP leader and former minister B.J. Puttaswamy on Friday embraced 'sanyas', or the ascetic way of life. Later this month on May 15, he will take over as the first pontiff of the Thaileswara Ganigara Mahasamsthana Mutt and be christened as Poornanandapuri Swami.

On Friday, Puttaswamy was initiated into sanyas or ascetism by Jayendra Puri, seer of the Kailasa Ashrama Mahasamsthana Mutt. On Thursday, he had taken Brahmacharya or the vows of celibacy.

The 83-year old politician was till recently the vice-chairperson of the Karnataka State Policy and Planning Commission. Earlier, he had served as a minister in the Jagadish Shettar cabinet. Puttaswamy was known for his proximity to former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa.

    Sanyasi means one who surrender his life to god's glory from h is childhood days. He will not have physical relationship with woman. But here he finished enjoying everything and now sanyasi? I feel like laughing. My kind advice to yediyurappa also to join him.

    Someone Swamiji has said he will form a group of 50 swamijis to contest for 2023 Karnataka Assembly election. I think Putta Swami Yane Poorna Aanda Swami will join that group and may try for CM post. Having good knowledge in politics.

    I do not know, how many of those who took to sanyas, ever remain satisfied with their life decision because reverting to worldly life later will be considered a failure and will be looked down on. It may make them be in the garb of being sanyasi which they are not. They may start amassing wealth, political power, immoral acts, and whatnot. We get many examples. Still, some remain real sanyasi, ever. Another point; is it needed to denounce every worldly pleasure/duty to do something big? Dr. Abdul Kalam did his job till the last breath but remained a sanyasi. Baba Amte did not leave his family to do great social work. Nana Patekar does not need to leave his career to help farmers. I consider them a better form of sanyasi than ones who just preach. It brings us back to the question do we need to take up sanyas formally to do something good and something great?
