Udupi: ‘Floating bridge disconnected purposely to avoid damage’

Updated

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi

Udupi, May 9: Dismissing reports over the state’s only floating bridge collapsing at Malpe beach here, lease holder at Malpe beach and proprietor of Dial Mantra, Sudesh Shetty, said that the locks of the bridge of the bridge were disconnected to avoid damage.

In a statement to the media, he said, “Due to cyclone effect and heavy wind, we had disconnected the locks of the bridge so that the floating bridge does not incur any damage. Because of which some of the blocks of the bridge were floating in the sea this morning.

Sudesh Shetty

“We have understood that people have fallen for the rumour saying there were casualties. We strongly confirm that there were no casualties nor harm to anynone. Currently, the floating bridge remains closed because of the notice from the administration regarding no water sports activities,” he stated.

Udupi: Floating bridge collapses at Malpe beach three days after inauguration

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (JD/MS)

Udupi, May 9: The floating bridge that was installed at Malpe beach and inaugurated just three days ago collapsed here.

From the afternoon of Sunday May 8, the bridge was severely damaged due to the rough sea and high waves. So public was barred from walking on it from Sunday afternoon itself.

On the morning of Monday, the bridge got washed away into the sea. Fortunately, no life was lost as people were barred from entering it.

The bridge is Karnataka's first pontoon bridge (floating bridge). It was inaugurated on May 6 by MLA Raghupati Bhat, former minister Pramod Madhwaraj and other dignitaries.

The total length of the bridge was 100 meters and is 3.5 meters wide. The facility was supposed to be kept open for 15 days on a trial basis. The total cost of the project is around Rs 75-80 lac, as informed by the authorities.

I've been a visitor of this Floating bridge yesterday, I found the quality to be quite good, on par with International standards and yes, the heavy storms could've affected the same, probably. Cannot really judge the quality as yet.

Oh Tejas.....dont just see the quality of the blocks which are dismantled....try to evaluate the quality of the construction. While constructing, engineers/contractors didnt know the severity of storms and waves which are there normally everyday ??? Within three days blocks are washed out and gathered at the sea shore ...Still, you are saying quality is good...

Some people are commenting thinking they are expert on the floating bridge and some comparing it with Floating bridge of Dubai, seriously first of all this is not the Government funded bridge ,its invested by private parties and made for attracting tourism and we all know when the monsoon starts all the sport activities including fishing is prohibited ,even if you guys have watched the inauguration date video , it was mentioned it will be run only for few days. Our Costal side seas are rough and specially & also there was heavy wind and cyclone. There were lots of tourists were in Que lined up to go to the bridge but the Beach development authorities stopped and started dismantled it . Its easy to spread rumors and create a bad image of our udupi. See if you are really scared or think its not safe to go in the bridge its alright, this bridge is not mandatory you need to take go to Malpe beach or st.mary's island. If you need to experience the thrill, then only you can go. Also Malpe has been attracting lots of tourists and it has created jobs for so many people. So if you cannot appreciate the efforts of people who are working hard to make it world class beach at least don't create rumors or spread negative news. Lets hope it will start soon for public.

I still don't understand why most people treat the politicians as something superior, they are just there to serve the people. Why are there hoardings thanking politicians when some roads or bridges constructed ? these constructions happen from the hard earned money of the taxpayers right ? I seriously don't understand when the mindset of some people who glorify politicians when something is constructed will change. Why should commission be paid to politicians ?

I was wonder when I first see this bridge , no adequate handrail , how people will withstand during high tide , only handrail provided with nylon rope , is that sufficient to safe guard person if he lost his balance during high wave length. Certain people including ex minister observed with life jacket not worn properly . Incase accidental fall in to sea , if your jacket unsecured then it will be washed off from your body and we will sink to the sea . How government given permission such type of risky bridge , did load bearing capacity calcuated ? Did it completed quality control or mechanical completion checking ? Did it completed safety inspection prior to commissioning .? Muncipality / government playing with life of people ? government least bothered about the safety measures in india.
