Kannada actress dies during fat removal surgery, parents allege negligence

Bengaluru, May 17 (IANS): In a shocking development, a 21-year-old Kannada small screen actress died while undergoing fat removal surgery in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

According to police, she was undergoing surgery without knowledge of her parents.

Chetana Raj is the young actress who succumbed during surgery. The parents are now alleging negligence on part of the surgeons. They are also saying that the surgery was conducted without proper equipment.

Chetana Raj is a resident of Abbigere in Bengaluru. The hospital authorities are maintaining that the death occurred due to water getting deposited in her lungs during surgery.

Chethana Raj had acted in popular serials 'Geetha', 'Doresaani', 'Olavina Nildana'. She had also acted in 'Havayaami', a Kannada movie.

Govinda Raj, father of Chetana Raj explained that his daughter was admitted to the hospital at 8.30 am on Monday. By the time they got to know about it, the surgery had already started.

By the evening, the lungs were filled with water or fat content and she had faced breathing problems. There were no proper facilities in the ICU, he said.

Chetana Raj had asked them for permission to undergo fat surgery but the family had told her not to undergo the surgery. She had undergone surgery without family members' knowledge, he explained.

"My daughter died due to the negligence of the hospital. The doctors have conducted surgery without parental consent and without proper equipment," he stated.

"My daughter was hale and hearty. She was absolutely fine. She had gone to hospital with her friends. Someone has suggested to her that she had more fat in the waist and without consulting any family member she had come for the surgery. "I will initiate legal action against hospital authorities," he said.

Please check if the doctor who performed surgery was an 'ayurvedic' doctor. "The central government had allowed PG students of Ayurveda to perform various kinds of general surgery and medical procedures, including orthopaedic, ophthalmology, ENT and dental, by notifying an amendment in a gazette notification the CCIM issued in November." - Dec 20, 2020. Death probably was due to anesthesia complications not surgery, if detected early death could have been prevented.

What you're saying doesn't make sense at all. After 18 a minor becomes legal meaning they don't parental consent for any legal documents other than their own signature. Here the actress was 21 and knew the complications. It's a very sad case. Om shanthi.

Fat removal can be done only thru diet and aerobic work out that too is limited to the genetic potential. This is not the first time such incidents are happening. Its a very dangerous move. Many individuals have lost their lives taking this road. May her soul rest in peace.

Only after trying non-surgical methods should one go for liposuction, which is very risky. Because of a friend's comment, a precious life is lost. RIP. What could possibly go wrong with my liposuction? Liposuction can occasionally result in: Lumpy and uneven results Bleeding under the skin (a condition called haematoma) Persistent numbness that can last for months Changes in skin colour in the treated areas A build-up of fluid in the lungs (called pulmonary oedema) due to the fluid injected into the body A blood clot in the lungs (termed pulmonary embolism) Damage to internal organs during the course of the procedure.

The doctors should have told her about all the pros & cons of the surgery before getting her consent. But commercial interests are more than welfare of patients these days. Exercise & weight training could have reduced her girth along with diet without injuring or causing death. Most of the times those who are with perfect BMI & ratio are feeling insecure because of the ads on media & want to get the Barbie figure which is nothing but anorexic & anemic pathetic look instead of full & beautiful natural figure which is healthy & not to be considered as a minus quality to be in the industry.

It's possible that the liposuction was carried out by an inexperienced surgeon in a hospital without adequate emergency facilities. Maybe she was not informed clearly about the risks involved, and that she should try other options as was very young. In all probability it could be a negligence of the doctor!

If the procedure was done under general anesthesia, and the patient was not " nil orally " ( had taken food or water few hours before surgery) then the primary fault would be of the patient, though the anaesthtist cannot absolve himself of responsibility. Also the patient should have informed parents/relatives before surgery as no surgery can be taken lightly however minor.

Nothing is permanent in this world. Some go after Plastic surgery and spoil what is gifted by God. Most of the celebrities who performed plastic surgeries end up in disfiguring their face at older age. Beauty and figure will not last for ever. Be content with gift of God for giving us life . Extra fat could be reduced by control on intake and regular exercise!
