Bid to smuggle out foreign currency foiled in Chennai, one held


Chennai, Jun 6 (IANS): One person was arrested by Customs officials for trying to smuggle out assorted foreign currencies equivalent to Rs 97.46 lakh, Customs Commissioner, Chennai International Airport, said on Monday.

According to the Customs, Wasim Akram, who was about to board a flight for Sharjah, was intercepted by Customs officers and his baggage was examined thoroughly.

During examination of his checked-in baggage, assorted foreign currency of various denominations equivalent to Rs 97.46 lakh was found concealed in a specially-designed cavity.

The foreign currency was seized and the passenger was arrested under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962.
