Mangaluru, Jun 7: Locals residing at Bangrakulur have accused that sand is being extracted illegally in copious amounts from Phalguni river. The residents say that the activities start as the sun sets.

The local residents say, “Sand extraction is prohibited in this area which falls under CRZ. However, for the past 15 days illegal sand mining is in progress. District administration is alerted by the locals and appeal is submitted. Roads and houses are on the verge of collapse because of extracting sand from river. We suspect whether officials are quiet due to the pressure exerted by strong people in society.”

Pius D’Souza, a local resident said, “GPS is not fixed on the vehicles transporting sand. From sunset, the sand extraction goes on till 5 AM.”

When the same matter was raised with DC, Dr Rajendra K V said, “Locals have brought this to my notice. I will send officials and investigate the matter. Action will be taken to control illegal sand mining.”
