Mangaluru, Jun 7: Eight special achievers in various sectors belonging to Shivalli Brahmin community were conferred with Shivalli Rathna awards at the Shivalli Spandana anniversary held in Sharavu Balambhat auditorium here.
Kudupu temple tantri Vedamurthi Kudupu Narasimha Tantri was bestowed with Tantragama Rathna award, trustee Harikrishan Punarooru with Samaja Rathna award, M B Puranik with Shikshana Ratna award, Arooru Prabhaker Rao with Udyama Rathna award for achievement in transport sector, Harinarayana and Leelavati Baipadithaya for achievement in Yakshagana with Kalarathna award, Deepa K with Kreeda Rathna award for winning gold medal in international powerlifting and cookery expert Sharavu Raghavendra Pakashastra Rathna award.
“Kshatriya, Vaisha and Shoodra sects are mixed in the present day Brahmins. We should live with Brahmins that do good for the hometown, getting accustomed to Kalyuga,” said Dakshina Kannada district Shivalli Brahmin Sangha president Dr M M Dayaker.
“The number of Brahmins has decreased in government offices and the education sector. We should preserve our culture instead of making changes to it,” he said.
Award recipient M B Puranik said that community children should be taught Shivalli Hindu values in their childhood. “They are getting inclined to foreign culture cutting cake on birthdays. Our tradition has remained among Shivalli community outside the state,” he said.
“Shivalli boys do not get girls for marriage. Girls go for marriage outside the religion. Children should be taught the right values,” he said. He released the community newspaper Spandana.
Shivalli Spandana president Krishna Bhat welcomed. Vadiraja Kalluraya compered the programme. Secretary Ganesh Hebbar proposed a vote of thanks. Kateel zone president Ananta Padmanabha read the letters of felicitation. Treasurer Sumana Rao was on the dais.
Cultural programmes were presented by various zones under the leadership of vice president Udaya Shankar.
