Nupur Sharma again refuses to turn up at police station in Kolkata

Kolkata, Jun 25 (IANS): Suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma, on Saturday, once again refused to adhere to the summons from a police station in Kolkata.

According to the summons issued by Amherst Street police station under the north and north suburban police station under Kolkata Police, Sharma was supposed to be present at said police station on Saturday afternoon. However, a letter from Sharma reached the Kolkata Police through email on Saturday, where she has sought some more time to appear as she apprehends security threat if she comes to the city.

This is the second time that Sharma has ignored the summons from the city police. Earlier, she was sent a notice from the Narkeldanga Police station under Kolkata Police's eastern suburban division where she was asked to be present at the said police station on June 20. However, at that time too, she refused to turn up at the last moment citing security reasons.

Soon after Sharma's controversial comments on Prophet Muhammad went viral, there were severe tensions in a number of minority - dominated pockets in West Bengal districts like Howrah, Nadia and Murshidabad.

Clashes erupted between the agitators and the police in which Domjur Police station in Howrah district was attacked, police vehicles were torched and several police personnel were injured. Internet services were also suspended for a few days in a number of pockets to arrest the spread of rumours.

Following countrywide tension over the controversial comments, the BJP suspended her from the party. The BJP also took action against Delhi leader Naveen Kumar Jindal who shared her comments on Twitter.

When people go on TV debates a lot of mud slinging takes place. When living in pluralistic societies you are bound to find people with divergent and diagonally opposite views and you have to be thick skinned to let any and everything bounce off your chest. When two sides differing on each and every front what do you expect "A Love Story"? Here are the choices we have: 1. Ban FREE speech in India. 2. If any party is so sensitive to comments being made by the other side then please DO NOT go for those debates on national TV, and worse on a LIVE show. 3. All sides should refrain from comments that are considered derogatory 4. The anchor should have the capability to mute anyone who ever breaks the rule. 5. There should be a clear difference between facts and lies. Facts are allowed and must be upheld, but those who spread lies and falsehood should be banned from further debates. 6 Lastly, no matter what is said there is ABSOLUTELY NO ROOM FOR RIOTING in the streets and burning or public and private properties. 7. Lastly, if you cannot stomach all or any of the above DO NOT watch TV, read online news or watch whatsAp vidoes, Youtube Videos, or any other forms of communication
