Bahrain Eases Curfew as Work to Return to Normal

Manama, Mar 19 (Reuters):
Bahrain reduced curfew times by four hours on Saturday and said ministries and schools would return to normal working hours after a crackdown on mainly Shi'ite protesters raised tensions in the oil-producing region.

Bahrain has arrested at least seven opposition leaders and driven pro-democracy demonstrators from the streets after weeks of protests that prompted its king to declare martial law and draw in troops from fellow Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia.

The unrest brought Bahrain's economy to a virtual standstill and schools and universities were closed to prevent sectarian clashes that had begun to erupt daily.

Earlier this week, Bahrain imposed a curfew on large swathes of the capital Manama from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m., later reducing those hours in some areas.

The curfew now runs from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. from Seef Mall, through the Pearl roundabout and the financial district to the diplomatic area.

"The education ministry calls on all the employees of the ministry, schools, nurseries and higher education institutes, both public and private, ... to return to work starting from Sunday March 20," it said in a statement on Bahrain News Agency.

It said students would be given a date soon to return to schools and universities.

If you want to understand Bahrain and its people/culture, you have to settle down in Bahrain for some months at least. Bahrain got a right leadership, who are ready to discuss any subject in connection with the comforts of its citizens. They care for Indians and expatriates a lot. Ministers are well educated, who got a clear vision of what they do in their area. There are 11 lakh residents in Bahrain and Bahrainis are about 6 lakhs plus.

Three and half lakhs are Indians. It is unfortunate that such protests were taken place in the name of freedom. Today the country has started to return to its normal days. Hope the situation will improve. I do not agree with the idea of Indian Govt. creating job opportunities for NRIs. There are enough jobs in our own cities. We are not ready to do many jobs because of our false prestige.

AT PRESENT THE SITUATION IN GCC IS LIKE "BOODI MUCHHIDA KENDA", EXACTLY NOBODY KNOWS WHAT IS HAPPENING? MAY BE IT IS ONLY TEMPORARY SOLUTION ATPRESENT, BUT IN LONG-RUN THE SITUATION MAY ERRUPT ANYTIME WITH MORE VIOLENCE. BUT OUR INDIAN CENTRAL & STATE GOVT. (SPECIALLY SOUTH) NOT EVEN BOTHERED ABOUT NRI IS GCC, BECAUSUE NRIS ARE (NOT REQUIRED INDIANS). ACCORDING TO THEM IT IS ONLY PEANUTS CONTRIBUTION TO INDIAN ECONOMY (GETTING ONLY 3.5% NRI BANK INTEREST). SPECIALLY SOUTHINDIAN STATES MUST WAKE-UP NOW & CRATE JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOUTHINDIAN NRIS, AS THEIR FUTURE IN GCC IS VERY DULL & ALARMING.

Sometimes, news from 'Reuters' are incomplete which may mislead readers. Quote "Bahrain has arrested ....and draw in troops from fellow Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia." unquote. Readers gets the wrong impression that troops were drawn from Saudi Arabia only. What is correct is according to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) defense pact, their members can request military assistance from any of the GCC countries. In this case, Bahrain has requested some troops not only from Saudi Arabia, but Qatar and UAE which is in conformance with their defense pact. Readers should be provided with complete informtion and not part of it.
