7 kids die after attempting deadly 'blackout challenge' on TikTok

San Francisco, Jul 8 (IANS): At least seven kids, under age 15, have lost their lives owing to the infamous 'blackout challenge' on Chinese short-video making app TikTok that encourages users to "choke themselves with belts, purse strings, or anything similar until passing out."

TikTok is facing multiple lawsuits from parents who alleged their kids died of strangulation attempting the "blackout challenge", The Verge reported on Thursday.

The most recent lawsuit was filed by the parents of eight-year-old Lalani Walton and nine-year-old Arriani Arroyo.

A 10-year-old in Italy died in January 2021; a 12-year-old in Colorado in the US died in March 2021; a 14-year-old in Australia who died in June 2021; a 12-year-old in Oklahoma who died in July 2021 and another 10-year-old in Pennsylvania who reportedly died in December 2021, according to multiple reports.

Tawainna Anderson, the mother of the 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl Nylah Anderson, is also suing TikTok, alleging that the app "pushed exceedingly and unacceptably dangerous challenges."

Some lawsuits alleged that kids weren't searching for challenges when they saw the videos.

Instead "TikTok put it right in front of them on the app's main screen, the For You page".

A TikTok spokesperson said that this disturbing "challenge", which people seem to learn about from sources other than TikTok, long predates our platform and has never been a TikTok trend.

"We remain vigilant in our commitment to user safety and would immediately remove related content if found. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family for their tragic loss," the company spokesperson said.

Dont blame TikTok, Reels, FB, Insta... check on your kids, do they need a Mobile at such young age.. Social Media will show many things, they need attention / viewership, but it is we parents that need to keep a Tab on all our kids activities...
