Karkala, Mar 24: Udupi district deputy commissioner (DC), Hemalata P, who noted that the people residing and conducting business on both the sides of the main road here, had earlier been asked to voluntarily vacate land measuring seven feet each on both sides for road expansion before March 31. She said that there is no question of extending this deadline.

Speaking to reporters during her visit to the town on Wednesday March 23, the DC revealed that most of the residents and businessmen have agreed to go back by seven feet, and a number of those who had not agreed earlier, too have concurred with the request of the district administration now. Some others have sought a couple of days more to clear their buildings because of labour shortage, she said, adding that the district administration will take a decision about those who remain stubborn on not leaving their land for the road.

The DC expressed confidence that the main road here will get transformed into a spacious and beautiful road shortly, and that even the municipal building will be cleared to an extent of seven feet. She inspected the portion of the municipal building that is set to be demolished for the purpose.

District planning officer, Krishna Hebsur, municipal chief officer, Gopalakrishna, engineer, Madan, health officer, Sundar Poojary, and revenue officer, K P Nayak, accompanied her.

Tahsildar, Jagannath, said that the time limit set for clearing the government buildings located on this road has ended, and that the taluk administration will take steps from March 24 onwards to clear the remaining buildings that have not earmarked land for the road.
