Assam doctor, 8 others suspended for leaving pregnant woman unattended

Guwahati, Jul 12 (IANS): Nine health workers, including a doctor, in Assam's Dima Hasao district were suspended on Monday for negligence after a pregnant woman with labour pain went to a Primary Health Centre only to find it closed, health officials said.

A viral video showed the pregnant woman bleeding profusely after developing pregnancy complications.

The incident took place last week in Khepre Primary Health Centre in Dima Hasao district along the Assam-Nagaland border.

The woman has subsequently delivered the baby in the sub-divisional hospital and both the mother and child are now fine.

The Dima Hasao Autonomous Council's Chief Executive Debolal Gorlosa, after verifying the matter, on Monday instructed the Principal Secretary to initiate investigation and to suspend the health workers and the doctor.

Local people alleged that health workers and the doctors at the health centre do not carry out their duties and remain unavailable, even when people in distress reach there.
