Mangaluru: Two-day Chess Championship held at St Agnes College

Mangaluru, Jul 16: St Agnes College (Autonomous) herein association with Mangalore University had organised a two-day chess tournament on July 13 and 14.

The valedictory programme of the tournament began at 4:30 PM. The audience were welcomed by Asha Albuquerque, assistant professor of English. The chief guests for the event were Dr Gerald Santosh D'Souza, director, Department of Physical Education, Mangalore University and Venugopalakrishna Nonda, Rtd Physical Education director, St Marys College, Shirva. 

Other dignitaries on the dais were Sr Dr M Venissa AC, the principal, Derik Pinto, founder Deriks Chess School Mangaluru, Ganesh Kotian, physical education director UPM College Udupi, the observer for the tournament and Vasudha, physical education director. 

The winners of the tournament in the womens category were Poornaprajna Evening College, Udupi.  The runners up were Kalavara Varadaraja M Shetty, Government First Grade College Koteshwara, Udupi. The third place was bagged by SDM Degree College, Ujire and the fourth place was bagged by St Agnes College, Mangaluru. 

The champions in the mens category and the Gulabi Shivarama Nonda Rolling Trophy for men were awarded to Vivekananda College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Puttur. The second place was won by Alva’s College, Mududbidri The third place was bagged by SDM Degree College, Ujire and the fourth place was bagged by Trisha Evening College, Mangaluru. 

There were six individual board game awards for men and 5 individual board game awards for women. The event ended with Vasudha, physical education director proposing a vote ofthanks. Tanu if II BSc compered the programme.
