Overspeeding vehicle mows down traffic constable in Gujarat


Anand, Jul 20 (IANS): In a tragic incident a heavy commercial vehicle driver ran over a traffic constable on Tuesday night, who succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning. The Anand police is searching for the truck driver who fled abandoning the truck.

Anand District Superintendent of Police Ajit Rajian told the local media that "a truck driver has hit and run away, in which a traffic jawan Kiransinh Raj was injured in Borsad, later the jawan died in the hospital while he was under treatment. The police is searching for the truck driver who fled from the crime scene. A culpable homicide case has been registered against the truck driver."

The officer said, "The traffic police was conducting night patrolling and checking on the highway when the traffic constable tried to stop a truck trailer with registration number ARJ - 52 - GA -3908. The driver did not stop and passed the barricade with the intent to flee. To arrest the truck driver, constable Kiransinh Raj chased the truck, when the driver ran the truck over the constable and later abandoned it and fled. Raj was rushed to Karamsad hospital, where he was being treated for fractures in his legs and other injuries, where he died on Wednesday morning."

Kiransinh was the father of two children. His wife had died four years ago. He had joined the police force in 2006.

In another incident, the Surat police have arrested two persons for threatening and beating a Traffic Brigade jawan near Sarthana on Tuesday night when he tried to stop the car in which two youths were travelling. The youths got down and started beating the jawan, and when he tried to escape the youths chased him with a knife, the police said.
