Mangaluru: Carmel School holds Van Mahotsav

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jul 21: Van Mahotsav is an annual tree-planting festival in India. This movement was initiated in the year 1950 by India's Union Minister for Agriculture, Dr.K M Munshi. This festival is a crusade to save Mother Earth and in actuality, a ‘festival of life’ because every tree planted is a hope of new life – healthy and happy!

Carmel School celebrated Van Mahotsava, recently, with great passion by planting saplings by Sr Marie Lucy- joint secretary of St Ann’s Campus Institutions and Superior of St Ann’s Convent, Sr Sarika -the Principal, Sr Violette- the administrator, Sr Preena- the vice principal, Sr Shanthi Laveena- coordinator, staff representatives and student representatives followed by a brief programme in the School Auditorium. Students of Grade 10 A under the able guidance of Zeena Menezes, invoked the Divine Assistance through the Readings of Holy Scrptures, Reflections and Prayers on the ecosystem services provided by the forests.

'Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago'- with reference to the above quote by Warren Buffett, the history and significance of the day was enacted through a thought provoking skit.

'Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky' – This theme was brilliantly exemplified in the scintillating dances . The dancers captured emotions and imaginations by delivering true feelings behind each character they portray through body movements, postures and intricate expressions.

Sr Violette in her presidential address said, “Nature is the mother that nurtures and provides for all our needs. It is the matrix in which we survive, live and grow. To neglect, abandon or destroying nature in a small way is to cut our own roots, to dig our own grave and to hinder the welfare and happiness of future generations . If we take care of nature , then nature will also take care of us in return”.

The winners of International Science Olympiad - 2021 and Indian Talent Exam 2019- 20 were honoured on the day. The programme was compered by Ashel, Haifa and Disha.

Farseena welcomed the gathering. Jaagvee proposed the vote of thanks.
