Man held with gold worth Rs 1.21 cr at Varanasi airport


New Delhi, Jul 22 (IANS): The Customs official at Lal Bahadur Shastri International airport in Varanasi arrested an air passenger and recovered gold worth Rs 1.21 crore from his possession.

A senior customs official said that on July 22, it was learnt that the passenger was coming after short stay.

"The passenger came from Sharjah to Varanasi. Our Varanasi team was able to seize 2332.800 grams of pure gold worth Rs 1,21,30,560 from him. Gold was kept in the form of 20 gold bars, concealed in black tape and wrapped under waist. These gold bars were recovered during personal search of passenger," said the official.

Later on, the passenger was placed under arrest.

He will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (Economic Offences), Varanasi.

Further investigation in the matter is on.
