Postal dept to release commemorative stamp in honour of TN freedom fighter Ondiveeran


Chennai, Aug 1 (IANS): A commemorative postage stamp in honour of freedom fighter Ondiveeran who had fought against the British would soon be released here.

The Centre has approved a proposal by the Tamil Nadu government in this regard.

The postal department is likely to release the commemorative stamp on August 20, 250th birthday of the freedom fighter.

Ondiveeran, was a trusted lieutenant of Pulithevan Army that had fought against the British bringing in major casualties to the invading force and the valiant fighter had led many of the fights from the front.

He was a native of Nerkattum Seval near Sankarankoil in the erstwhile Tirunelveli district which is now bifurcated and is now part of Tenkasi district.

The DMK government under M. Karunanidhi laid the foundation for a memorial in 2011, "Maveeran Ondiveeran Manimandapam" in Palayamkottai, and the subsequent AIADMK government of J. Jayalalithaa inaugurated the memorial with a statue of Ondiveeran.

Many Tamil scholars and intellectuals have also called upon the state government to rename, the Government Arts and Science College at Sankarankoil after Ondiveeran.
