Media Release

Mangaluru, Aug 2: St Aloysius PU College celebrated July 2022 as the Ignatian month. This marked the conclusion of the ‘Ignatian year, Ignatius500’-Seeing things new in Christ, which began on 20 May 2021 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the conversion of St Ignatius of Loyola from a sinner to a saint.

St Ignatius Loyola was born in 1491, in a family of nobility in northern Spain. As a young man Ignatius of Loyola was inflamed by the ideals of courtly love and knighthood and dreamed of doing great deeds as a soldier, enchanter and lover. But in 1521 Ignatius was gravely wounded in a battle with the French. He was hit by the cannonball which shattered his right leg. While recuperating, Ignatius Loyola experienced a spiritual conversion – a conversion which transformed and reformed him from being a soldier to a spiritual seeker and pilgrim. Seeking God, eventually lent himself to serve people, and in 1,540 he founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) with a few companions. This year also clocks the 400th anniversary of the canonization of St Ignatius.

The campus ministry of SAPUC celebrated the Ignatian month with great zeal and fervour. Nine Ignatian Insights- Life stories of St Ignatius were conveyed during the daily assemblies. Student representatives of the campus ministry also gave presentations on the life of Ignatius of Loyola to enable the students to imbibe his virtues and values. Posters were circulated among staff and students during the month of July, to highlight the words and works of Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuit contribution to society. Competitions like painting, short story writing and quiz were organized. The AICUF members also conducted the best clean classroom award for maintaining cleanliness in and around the classroom.

A talk, on the ‘Life of Ignatius of Loyola’ was organised for the staff on July 29. Fr Pradeep Sequeira SJ, Finance Officer was the resource person. Fr Pradeep highlighted the core values imbibed by Ignatius of Loyola such as-passion for God’s glory, contemplation in action, service to human beings and discernment.

The feast concluded with a festive mass, which was celebrated by Fr Clifford Fernandes, parish priest of Holy Cross Church, Cordel. Staff and students took part in the Holy Eucharistic Celebration in large numbers.
