Waqb Board demands Eid Milad in schools like Ganesha festival

Bengaluru, Aug 18 (IANS): After the hijab row, the Karnataka education sector is all set for another crisis with the state Wakf Board demanding that the education department permit them to celebrate Eid Milad in schools like the Ganesh festival.

Education Minister B C Nagesh stated on Thursday that no religious function is allowed in schools. Such a permission has not been given so far and the demand of the Wakf Board will not be considered.

Nagesh said that the celebration of the Ganesh festival has not been introduced by the BJP government. The idols of Lord Ganesh have been kept in schools since the pre-independence period.

The Wakf Board under the chairmanship of Shafi Saadi had demanded that the education department reserve a separate room in schools to perform namaz.

Shafi Saadi demanded that, "there should be an opportunity for the celebration of festivals of our religion. Children belonging to all religions must have equal rights."

"During the hijab crisis also we had clarified that misunderstandings must be allayed through creating awareness about religious matters. Like the Ganesh festival is celebrated, a room should be kept for the practise of Islam," he maintained.

All these demands finally led to partition in 1947. Hindus gave separate land for one section.

I thought, we declare holiday for Eid Milad? Is Eid Milad celebrated for 10 days? Is it allowed to celebrate Eid Milad one day later? Karnataka Rajyotsava can be celebrated on any day between 01 November to end of November. Are we allowed this luxury? And yes, if Eid Milad should be celebrated in school, stop declaring holidays for this holy occasion please. We will celebrate in school. And please, oh please, scrap Waq"b" board for once. No tax payers money should go into this embarrassing institution.

Mayya. Deepavali celebrated for 3 days, so do school provide 3 days holiday? When the court rejected Hijab saying all are equal then why celebrating festivals in schools of one faith? This same sick government were hell bent on saying school uniform resembles equality in school, so where are the samw ethics now when one faith celebrates and others just get ignored.

Dear Ahmed, Bangalore, As school is where our kids learn, it is also a good place to celebrate Eid Milad. At the very least, those who do not celebrate will know the meaning of celebration. At the moment, I doubt anyone other than those from the faith know the true meaning. However, if celebrated on a different day (like all festivals celebrated in advance in anticipation of off day), another new controversy may arise and it might require another intervention from Wakf board and hence my question. If bringing controversy into school is the motive, then we are happy without celebration, is what I wanted to convey whilst encouraging the celebration. As the demand is from 30% population which is wrongly called minority, it is a just demand.
