Hubballi, Aug 21:“Those criticising or supporting historically noted personalities like Veer Savarkar or Tipu Sultan must do it rationally as there are bound to be different views,” said Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai in Hubballi on Sunday.

Speaking to media persons in Hubballi, the chief minister said there are bound to be different perceptions on historical facts and it is common to have for and against arguments.”But all these instances, it must be done rationality. Such issues must not be dragged to streets and create law and order problems,” he said.

On his way to participate in a number of programmes in Haveri district, he said former prime minister Indira Gandhi had praised Savarkar as a “great son of the country”.

In a democracy, responsibility is on the leaders to work for the country’s unity, despite having differences, he said.

Bommai said investigation has been going on in connection with the egg attack on the car of Opposition Leader Siddaramaiah recently. Instructions have been given to provide proper security to Opposition Leader. However, it is left to the political parties to give political touch to this incident. But maintaining law and order is the duty of all political parties, he said.

CM promises healthcare facility for advocates

Later, participating at a function for laying the foundation stone for the Bar Association building in Shiggaon, the chief minister said a healthcare programme for the advocates will be launched soon.

Bommai said approval has been granted already to provide basic infrastructure to judiciary system in the State at a cost of Rs 800 crore. This will ensure good facilities in lower courts. As population increases the facilities in courts need to be improved. The State Government is giving more priority in this regard.

The Chief Minister said the government has given permission for having the bar associations in Shiggaon, Savanur and Haveri, and it will provide all infrastructure and furniture to the buildings. This will ensure a speedy justice for farmers of this region.

Instructions are given to reduce the cases in courts. There must be clarity while formulating laws without giving any scope for confusion and this will bring down the number of cases in courts, he said.

“A monitoring system has been started to monitor the pending cases in courts. Karnataka has the best judicial system as well as good infrastructure. In fact, the judicial system in Shiggaon and Savanur has seen a lot of improvement. Magistrate courts will be established in Shiggaon and Savanur,” he said.

The judicial system has been given a special status in Indian democracy. A lot of responsibility, respect and powers are given to judiciary. The role of judiciary is vital for the systematic functioning of democracy.

“The role of judiciary, legislature and executive is very important and the work of monitoring is vested with the media. The success of democracy in India is because it is resting on the four pillars. The roots of democracy are still strong in the country. The ideals of democracy are still relevant. It will be difficult to ensure equality if the democratic system is faulty,’’ he said.

Bommai said the advocate profession has a lot of social responsibility along with judiciary. There must be representation for judiciary in democracy. A robust judicial system has resulted in bringing a good Foreign Direct Investment in the State.

“I have a cordial relationship with judicial profession as my family members are advocates,” he added.

Bommai's call is reasonable because, however better you try to infuse propaganda through textbooks, we are no more dealing with illiterate society. We are dealing with partially literate but internet savvy society which has access to open literature. People want to put their point forward and come to a logical conclusion. Rationality is the need of the hour. We as a society can mature if and only if we can communicate, through reasoning and discussion. What is the hurry to agree or disagree? As Bommai suggests, rationality is the key.

Why are you time and again raking up the same old issue and digging the graves of people dead and gone. You have enough and more very important and serious issues in your hands to handle as per your portfolio and the oath you have taken. Don’t rake up any issues which are outside of your portfolio and against the constitution. Your job is to maintain peace, law and order in the society and not create one.
