Some say Udupi was carved out of DK district for development ..Some say it was a political ploy to undermine United Udupi and DK as part of greater Tulunadu by some vested interests ( we all know who they are) .For me Udupi ,Mangalore ,Kasargod ,southern parts of Shimogga, chickmaglur ,Coorg etc are all culturally Tulunadu ...No one can deny this fact.

Forget tourism infrastructure, the entire social environment is so charged up by religious bigotry, Communal disharmony, and issues like moral policing, cow trafficking etc that no person who is aware of current affairs would ever choose this place to come as a tourist!!

I am a Udupi town resident and my family has lived for decades in this town. Certainly, Udupi has developed in terms of broader roads from Adi Udupi to Manipal and beyond. Ambagil to Kalsanka the oldest road and connection from Kallianpur has also seen development thru Gundi Bail that used to get flooded every monsoon. But Adi Udupi to Malpe there has been zero development in terms of the same narrow road, no road names and signs anywhere, and lack of cleanliness in the surrounding areas close to the Malpe Beach. A few years ago storms and high seas during the monsoon season damaged the Malpe beach and its beach side residents. Large boulders to control the waves damage were put into place on the beach areas leading to Thottam and Kemman Hoode. But the beach road was not fixed at all. Because there are lot of tourists from outside of Karnataka and North Karnataka, a small fee of Rs.10.- should be levied to raise funds for the proper maintenance and development of the Malpe beach. Every tourist place charges a minimal fee to offset utility and maintenance costs. Same should apply to Malpe beach, and a Chain Link fence should be put up with entry/exit gates in several places all along the beach from the only hotel, and if possible the Bar licence should be suspended from the Restaurant operating very close to the beach. It contradicts the law, Dont drink and Swim! and still gives a facility to drink with no control or federal law. A lot can be done to bring the Malpe beach to international standards. Cooking should be banned by tourists coming in buses and mini buses and vans. The main road from Malpe Bus Stand to Adi Udupi must be broadened and in good condition with proper lighting and safety, road signs, road names and signs, etc. Even in Udupi town, none of the roads and streets have name boards in Kannada and English.. The local buses too have no name plates in English. How foolish is that! The Bus stands at Malpe and Udupi must be policed.
