Puttur, Aug 25: The building of Kombettu Government PU College, an institution that is more than 100 years old which was built during the British rule, is in danger following a construction activity that was allowed two decades ago.
The college playground was handed over to the Sports and Youth Affairs department about 20 years ago to carry out some developmental work. The contractor who had won the contract to develop the playground had flattened the soil of the hillock that was situated next to the institution and then drilling activity was carried out, thus causing damage to the college building.
Despite the warning given by the college principal against carrying out such an activity, the contractor did not pay heed or attention to the principal's warning and concern.
Kombettu Government Junior College is one of the few government colleges in the state with the maximum number of students.
While the construction activity was on and when the place was being flattened, drilling activity was done unscientifically especially because the college building is situated in an elevated region resulting in some damage to the college building structure.
Three classrooms of the college are in danger of collapsing and the compound wall of the college is posing danger. If the region receives heavy rainfall, the structure is likely to collapse. A barricade has been erected near the compound wall to prevent students from meandering around the region.
So far no action has been taken to rectify, rebuild or renovate the structure by the concerned authorities including the local MLA, Puttur assistant commissioner and the education department officials.
The Public Works Department is likely to take up the reconstruction work soon. A new place has been identified for the taluk playground in another location.
The college development committee has decided to take up the renovation of the compound wall and the classrooms with the grants-in aid being made available from the local sources, according to working president of the committee P G Jaganni Vaz.
