Exaggeration of Veer Savarkar in class 8 textbooks questioned

Bengaluru, Aug 27 (IANS): After violence over removal of Veer Savarkar's flexes in Shivamogga and opposition to placing his picture next to Lord Ganesh's idols during Vinayak Chaturthi, the social media is discussing exaggeration of Veer Savarkar in school textbooks.

With this, the textbook revision row has yet again resurfaced in the state. The education department has replaced a lesson from the Kannada textbook for Class 8.

The previous lesson "Blood Group" authored by Vijayamala has been replaced with "Kalavanu Geddavaru" (Those who won against time) lesson by K.K. Gatti. The lesson is the first person account of the author's visit to Andaman cellular jail where Veer Savarkar was kept.

The writer has also depicted the cell of Veer Savarkar and stated that though Savarkar's cell did not have any ventilaltion, BulBul birds managed to fly in and Savarkar sat on their wings and touched the earth of motherland every day. The social media campaign says the facts have been exaggerated.

Meanwhile, Tumakuru University in Karnataka is all set to establish the Research centre on Veer Savarkar, which is likely to create fresh controversy. The syndicate meeting has approved the decision and preparations are on to submit a proposal in this regard to the government, sources explained.

Politicization of Veer Savarkar is 100% complete. I wonder what our Maharashtrian brothers & sisters will have to say on this ridiculous downpour of unnecessary emotions. On one hand, we are up in arms against our Marathi neighbors and would not cede Belgaum (actually, we should ask Pune, parts of Mumbai, Thane in exchange if they are really interested in linguistic based argument in favor of Belgaum...pun intended and also because some of those areas operate only in Kannada and Tulu) but we cannot stop praising or disrespecting another Marathi in Veer Savarkar. Politics is like that. It makes you blind, irrational and illogical, and selective in interpretation. Veer Savarkar's only mistake as a freedom fighter was he did not trust the Congress and did not hide his distaste either by openly snubbing a meeting with MK Gandhi during his visit to Konkan. The winners of the Delhi Sultanat had 75 glorious years to rehash the history of their convenience and we have wonderful & many interpretations of Tipu and Veer Savarkar.

Savarkar was not a freedom fighter... He was just a leader of Hindu maha sabha... Ambedkar was clearly mentioned him as a face of a coin next of Jinnaha

Veer Savarkar.. Truly one of the greatest revolutionary sons of Bharat matha. 11 years kaalapani plus 25 years house arrest shows british fear. Would have never allowed partition and butchering of millions had be been a free bird.

Shetre ಕಾಮಿಡಿ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ ಆಂಡ್. 25 years of house arrest and this man was found propagating Hindutva by 1937. So which 25 years you are talking about? If Savarkar was really man of mettle, you don't have to resort to lies to explain his heroics. In reality he was the coward who ransacked a mosque near his house at the age of 12 and then went on writing letters after letters to British asking their pardon, regretting his previous actions that landed him jail. He was so brave that he himself had to write his autobiography under Chitragupta's name and call himself Veer. A man who supplied youth to British army while Netaji was trying to a build an army of Indian youth against British. A man who gave a call to Hindus and Hindu Sabha members to stay away from Quit India movement and stick to their posts and positions. Right on these columns name the Independence movements of which Savarkar was part of. He was not part of any movement and was jailed for on charges of supplying pistol to the killers of a British officer Jackson. So at best he was an illegal arms supplier. That's all. That too he regretted and lived in the bunglow given by the Brits and stayed on Rs 60 pension dolled out by the British. A perennial bootlicker!

Your description is 100% correct of this obedient servant of the Brits. It is so ridiculous that this self proclaiming Veer when in reality was a coward is being foisted upon the nation as a freedom fighter. The souls of All those heroes from Jhansi Rani, Bhagat Singh, Tilak, Bose, Gandhi, Nehru, Azad and countless others must be crying out in pain and dismay.

Instead of concentrating present situation regarding development...we still more focused about past which is of no use (speaking generally- not to a particular person) ..... i really don't understand why these jobless people are dragging a certain topic too much which ends up in clashes. Even the all politicians who directly or indirectly only highlight these matters instead of development. and here the problem is with peoples who don't care about development and only care about their ego and religion (includes all religions). JAGO INDIA JAGO!

There is no doubt that the History of India itself, it's independence struggle has been Exaggerated, to give credit to only 1 or 2 families. Where were these critics then? Our country just did not get Independence by spinning yarns. Lots and Lots, thousands whose names we don't even know laid down their lives for us to get Independence. Let this be known first.

Forget thousands and thousands of freedom martyrs whose names you don't remember, do you remember the names of our 20 army men who laid their lives down at Gulwan 2 years ago? It's humanly impossible to remember/print thousands of names in the text books. If you are really interested in knowing names, you can always google.

You seem to be in a hurry to reply. You seem to get the gist of what I had said, but pretend not to know, by giving it some wierd twist. What I have said is there is no need to glorify one or two. All are due the same respect. Glorify our Army.. now.Got my point?? Every army mens story who is fighting for us to sleep peacefully is sacred for us.No point in glorifying one or two Army Generals only.Hope this sinks in.
