Mangaluru: Cancer screening, awareness camp by Jewels, SSVP inaugurated

Mangaluru Aug 28: A simultaneous free cancer screening and awareness camps by teams of eminent and specialist doctors and nurses from Fr Muller Hospital, KMC, Attavar and A J Hospitalorganised by the ‘Jewels’ (Mangaluru & Qatar), a group of service minded people, in association with Societies of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP)/Health Commissions and the Indian Cancer Society, was inaugurated at St Lawrence School, Bondel here on Sunday, August 28.

The cancer screening simultaneously will be held in the awareness camps at the Rosario School campus, Pandeshwar and Parochial Higher Primary School, Bajpe.

Parish priest of St Lawrence Church, Bondel Fr Andrew Leo D Souza inaugurated the cancer screening and awareness camp.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr Andrew Leo D'Souza said, "It’s a wonderful program and every individual should make use of this screening. Early detection of the cancer will help in cure and never be afraid to consult a doctor."

Professor and head of radiation oncology at A J cancer institute Dr Kamlaksh Shenoy said, "Cancer is curable if detected early. Only 5% cases constitute hereditary causes. There are various advanced techniques of therapeutics and chemotherapy."

Health Commission convenor Jannaris Menezes, member of Jewels group Bonaventure D'Souza, secretary of church parish pastoral council Steevan Noronha, consultant, radiation oncology, A J Cancer Institute Dr Kavitha and others were present.

The ‘Jewels’ (Mangaluru & Qatar), a group of service minded people which started five years ago has been quietly serving the people, irrespective of their religion, caste or creed, in their hour of need, especially contributing towards their hospital, medical and treatment expenses, with a focus on cancer patients. Over the past years, the group has voluntarily contributed to help over 75 patients with a total contribution of around Rs 35 lac.

Continuing with this noble cause, and with the vision and focus on raising serious awareness about cancer among the masses and providing them an opportunity to get tested for various types of cancers, ‘Jewels’ (Mangaluru & Qatar), in association with the Societies of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP)/Health Commissions and in collaboration with the Indian Cancer Society, is conducting simultaneous free cancer screening and awareness camps by teams of eminent and specialist doctors and nurses from Fr Muller Hospital, KMC Attavar and A J Hospital at Rosario School campus, Pandeshwar, St Lawrence School campus, Bondel and Parochial Higher Primary School campus, Bajpe on Sunday August 28 from 9 AM to 1.30 PM.

The following tests, which normally cost Rs. 800-1000, will be provided free of cost:

1) Oral examination
2) Breast examination
3) Cervical examination

The camps are expected to be beneficial especially for the people with the following symptoms:

  • Thickening or lump in breast or scrotum
  • Prolonged bleeding and white discharge after menstruation
  • Frequent and recurrent cough, hoarse voice, difficulty in swallowing food
  • Unhealed ulcer or growth on cheek or tongue
  • Indigestion, loss of appetite; burping in the stomach, significant loss of body weight
  • Obvious change in mole or wart
