Mangaluru, Sep 7: The Mangaluru's 3rd Additional District Sessions Court on Tuesday, September 6, has sentenced retired joint director of fisheries directorate Gangadhara V Maddikeri to five years of simple imprisonment and levied a penalty of Rs 1.3 crore in an disproportionate assets case.
A case was registered against Gangadhara V Maddikeri by the Karnataka Lokayukta police while he was in service and was working in Mangaluru.
Judge B B Jakati sentenced the accused to five years of imprisonment and levied a penalty of Rs 1.3 crore under the Section 13(1) (E) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1998. The judge also ruled that the jail term of the accused will be extended by another six months if the accused fails to pay up the penalty amount.
Police sub-inspector Vittaldas Pai had conducted a preliminary investigation into the case and the inquiry was continued by sub-inspector Umesh G Shet. Police inspector S Vijaya Prasad who had served as a sub-inspector in Lokayukta Police and is now sub-inspector of Karkala sub-division police had completed the probe on December 4, 2015 and had submitted the chargesheet.
Ravindra Munnippadi was the public prosecutor in the case.
