BJP leader holds IT companies responsible for floods, crisis situation in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Sep 8 (IANS): Karnataka BJP leader N.R. Ramesh on Thursday held IT companies responsible for the floods and crisis situation that have arisen following heavy rains in Bengaluru.

Bengaluru has received 899 mm of rain in the last 3 months. This is the maximum rainfall in the last 50 years. "The companies are threatening the state government that they will have to be shifted to Telangana state. The state of Telangana is known as Naxal-prone state. The companies and employees will not be able to survive for a day," Ramesh stated.

Reacting to the warning given by IT companies through organisations that they would shift to Telangana, Ramesh maintained that they won't be able to operate in the state of Telangana which is Naxal-prone.

Ramesh, BJP President of Bengaluru South, responded to former Infosys director and entrepreneur T.V. Mohandas Pai's 'Save Bengaluru' campaign in an open letter. He slammed Mohan Das Pai's attempt to tarnish the image of Bengaluru in the crisis time by writing a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and carrying out a campaign on flood situation.

"You (Mohan Das Pai) have been carrying out the 'Save Bengaluru' campaign for 10 to 15 days, you have written letters to PM Modi and others. Social media campaign is also being undertaken. You have stated that IT and BT companies are contemplating to shift to Telangana state due to floods. During 1999, especially in Mahadevapura, Bommanahalli zones thousands of corporate companies started operating. The main reason being, Bengaluru was built above 3,000 feets from the sea level scientifically by then ruler Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda," he said.

"The other reasons are being the soft, cordial nature of the people of Bengaluru. During 1999 and 2004, for the benefit of IT and BT companies, the government did not collect tax for installation of OFC ducts in 4,500 kilometers of roads," he said.

The government did not charge for road digging and spent Rs 3,000 crore to provide free services at that time. Mohan Das Pai seems to have forgotten about this fact, Ramesh explained.

"We want to bring to your notice that IT and BT companies are also responsible for the flood situation in Bengaluru. By writing a letter to PM Modi, IT companies through their organisations have conducted in such a way that it has proved to be black mark on the image of the globally recognised city, which is also the only city to be built scientifically," he said.

"79 tech parks which come under Outer Ring Road Companies Association, more than 250 IT and BT companies under Electronic City Industries Association, more than 100 tech companies in Mahadevapura have encroached storm water drains at the time of construction. Infosys, Wipro, Biocon, Tech Mahindra, Tata Power, Bosch, IBM, TCS, HP and all other companies in the Electronics City have encroached upon storm water drains completely or narrowed them down," he stated.

"Knowing all these facts well, attempts are made to tarnish the image of the city. To evade tax to BBMP, under self-declaration of property tax system, a separate township has been created in the name of township. The companies are required to pay Rs 300 to Rs 400 crore as property tax. After getting all amenities from government agencies such as BBMP, BWSSB, IT companies have evaded Rs 400 crore tax money," he opined.

Presently, 3,758 IT companies, 92 BT companies, 79 tech parks are functioning in Bengaluru. More than Rs 2 lakh crore transaction is being carried out annually. As per CSR rules, the companies should have spent more than Rs 2,500 crore on CSR activities. IT companies have spent a few Rs 10 crore, he alleged.

Do not threaten the government, if IT and BT companies clear their encroachments, there will be a permanent solution to the flooding crisis in Bengaluru. Instead of blackmailing, behave judiciously and responsibly, Ramesh urged.

Irresponsible minister. Such attitudes only have compounded Bengaluru's woes. If the IT/BT industries truly shift, the ecosystem that generates start ups too will disappear. Just remember, Bengaluru depends substantially on migrants and people from all over to cope with the present and the future. Shed arrogance, find out why the problem happened in the first place. Who disbanded the BATF that was expected to address the needs of planned growth ? Those who create large value adding organizations need to be respected. But then those who know not what a value add means...well....not surprising. Hope the CM reprimands such irresponsible statements soon.

You knew very well that IT Companies encroached the storm water drainages. Then, why govt kept eyes and ears closed till now? When former founder and media published something you all woke up like kumbhakarna ? Why you all kept quiet when the taxes were not paid? Everything is known to you all. You all kept quiet because of 40% commission and bribes... You all accumulated vast property. Natural disasters inform the govt well in advance so and so date it will occur ? What are the developments in other part of the smart city other than the places where IT 's situated. My request to all the house owners/flat owners/bunglow owners to rise up. Nothing can you all attain by accumulating rent and keep quiet without raising your voices. On the rent also govt imposed gst to those who run businesses ...

Fault lies on both sides. Succesive political parties allowed people and companies to do illegal constructions. Companies made lot of money but paid their employees peanuts. The salary is counted as CTC (Cost to Company) , it is not a take home salary. When each person is picked by a "cab" ,the company shows it as seperate, while in reality 6 -12 employees are packed in a cab. Food is counted as if it is a five star hotel and even the cost of tissue paper is counted in the salary, it matters little if you eat or not. This is not so in all companies, but true for most. The carry home salary is poor. Employees are not allowed to form a union and are overworked. No laws applied like other industries.

Even prime land parcels were given to these companies at peanut prices in the guise of generating employment! BTW, this development will have a dampening effect on real estate as nobody in his senses would want to set up business in a place full of uncertainties! To bring normalcy would be a herculean task as demolishing huge illegal structures would be impossible due to obvious reasons as they are actually legal having got permission from the corrupt authorities of various governments in power at any point in time like the recently demolished twin towers in Noida! This guy should know that industrialists know the pros and cons of shifting to a new place more than him! All in all, they have bungled up everything in the euphoria of making Bengaluru the IT capital of India! This news is being closely observed and published by major foreign media channels which is very detrimental for the future of this state!

IT industry shift warning is a reality. By playing the blame game and covering up the actions of corrupt officials, he is pouring fuel to the fire implicating them of having forcibly done illegal constructions! In fact, Telengana is the most preferred place for newer industries coming up and his statement downplaying Telengana are childish! He is actually hitting his own legs with an axe! 899 mm rainfall in 3 months created such an havoc; imagine 1000 mm rainfall in 24 hours like it rained in Mumbai in 2005 what will be the condition of his state, which has to be anticipated considering the climate change world over!!

Minister admit you have failed to keep the state safe and business friendly by your incompetent and failed policies. Blaming IT companies for floods is height of misadministration and governance of state govt. Only dumbo and blind bhkaths will rejoice his comments. Companies will eventually migrate to non-BJP states for sure to be safe and to be among sensible people. BTW, BJP is the No.1 Naxalite in the country and many companies are operating in Telangana with ease and comfortably without any threat.

I fully endorse Mr Ramesh's views. The IT Industry though providing much needed jobs, is the main culprit for the uncontrolled growth of Bengaluru's population leading to large no of residential highrises in cramped spaces. The IT industry does not need infra structure as other industries do and they have been able to cram thousands of their staff into small complexes not only the centre of the city but in all conceivable places. This has put pressure on civic services and amenities leading to shortcuts and the ensuing disaster. Instead of blaming it on the rains and the Government, IT Industry must voluntarily move out to the hinterland and to smaller towns and villages and help in overall growth of the nation and spreading of wealth all over. Govt too must stop providing operating licenses to new IT companies to work within Bengaluru for the next five years.

Politicians of all 3 parties, beurocrats and whole adminstration should take the blame. In all other states there are atleast 4 major cities that get attention, here all companies and industries are mainly concentrated in Bangalore only, all other cities like Mangalore, Udupi, Hubli- Dharwad, Belgavi are never in the limelight, paradoxically all problems occur in Bangalore.....

Instead of agreeing to the total failure of infrastructure, this wizard's talks implicate that most IT companies built their buildings illegally without permissions from the authorities, which is an unsubstantiated allegation and will further provoke many companies to shift to other states where overall conditions and administration is much better than Bengaluru! Despite promises by the ruling party of taking corrective action nothing much will change unless they take ruthless action like demolishing of illegal structures which is practically impossible and overhaul the entire infrastructure like the power supply infrastructure! He is speaking as if these companies don't know the places where they are going to shift? Bengaluru received 899 mm rainfall in 3 months; imagine what will happen if it rained 1000mm in 24hrs like it happened in Mumbai in 2005, which is a distinct possibility in the future!

If IT companies have encroached upon the stormwater drains, how did the BBMP issue completion certificates without verifying the violation? Why were the encroachments not demolished at the construction stage? It appears Mr Ramesh is a bad workman who quarrels with his tools. Instead of finding a solution he's playing politics and resorting to the blame game.
