Cong leader, former Assembly Speaker K B Koliwad's remarks on farmer suicide goes viral

Haveri, Sep 9 (IANS): Controversial remarks made by K.B. Koliwad, former Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly, in connection with a farmer committing suicide has gone viral, causing widespread outrage.

Koliwad, a five-term Congress MLA, made the remarks while speaking to a party worker on the phone who had asked him to visit the victim's residence Ranibennur and put a garland on the body.

Ranibennur used to be Koliwad's former constituency.

"What can we do if he (farmer) hangs himself? He has committed suicide and is dead. Why do you bring up such cases? Why should I garland him? Once I garland him, then people will say neta had gone without giving any money, you have made it a habit," says the former Speaker.

He further asks the worker whether he had asked the farmer to commit suicide.

"You workers should not bring up such cases. He hanged himself and ended his life. The matter ends there. Have I asked him to do so? Why does he (dead farmer) need a garland? This is not done," he added.

After ending the call with the party worker, Koliwad continued his bitter attack, saying: "I don't know when will people learn? He says the farmer is dead and I have to visit his place and garland him. I don't know why he had hung himself and what injustice he had done."

The audio and video footage of the incident have gone viral on social media causing severe embarrassment to the Congress party in Karnataka which had launched an all-out attack on the ruling BJP over the collapse of infrastructure in Bengaluru due to the rain.

It is yet to be ascertained when the incident had taken place.

The audio and video clips came to public domain on Friday.

When farmers are in distress no politician meets them, but visiting and garlanding their body won't revive them. Fight for their cause like Rahul did & agitate to solve their problems should the way ahead.

Farmers wait untill BJP to help Adani to get his 5 trillion privet economy than all the farm land will be Adani's property, so after there will be no more farmers to commit suicide because all the farmers will work as daily wage labour, it will be daily wage labour's sucide not farmers sucide anymore...after that Let's Hope KB Koliwad won't make viral on Daily wage labour's sucide..

Even I don't understand why these politicians are visiting relatives or family members after the death / murder or suicide of any person. It should be stopped and even the compensation amount from the public money should be stopped.

I support Koliwada in this case. Farmer Suicide is not a point to be used in politics. Farmers are already given a lot of privileges like Kisan Samman Nidhi, Tax rebates, Subsidized fertilizer, Subsidized seeds, and what not?

He should learn from the likes of Solar Venu. Has he not seen his viral photo taking a nap in Kanyakumari on a wooden bench for some cause?? That too in white dhothi/ mundu??. When his main leader is walking across India, this fellow is singing a different RaGa. What Koliwada?? Very insensitive.

Really heartless way to express unwillingness by a 5 time elected leader from the constituency... He could have been more humane even if he did not want to go to pay last respects... This is for us to learn the real colors of these animals called politicians... Irrespective of the party they belong to, their inner selves are never for public service... They want all the flattering and enjoy all benefits plus kick backs on our expense... But for shedding crocodile tears in public they are mostly shallow humans...
