Seat belt alert needed for rear seats too, says Nitin Gadkari in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Sep 10 (IANS): Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, stressed on the importance of passengers in the rear seat wearing seatbelt while travelling in four-wheelers.

Referring to the tragic death of industrialist Cyrus Mistry, who died in a road accident near Mumbai on Sunday, Gadkari said, "I have made legal provisions in this regard."

Mistry, former Tata Sons Chairman, was sitting in the back seat and was not wearing a seatbelt when his speeding Mercedes crashed into a divider in Maharashtra's Palghar district on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference here, Gadkari said that provisions are being be made to introduce a seat belt alarm system for rear seats, just like the driver's seat.

"Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has called me three times from London to start a campaign in the backdrop of the death of Cyrus Mistry," Gadkari said.

"Though wearing seatbelt is mandatory for those sitting in the rear seat of a car, it is not followed. Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar along with many cricketers have agreed to campaign for this free of cost," Gadkari said.

It's definitely a good move by Mr. Nitin. But why can't our country cannot decide this from the beginning and wait till someone dies. When a bomb blasts take place, thorough checking will start at various locations, road work will start 15 days before monsoon etc. etc. Thereafter no action at all and finally the public will suffer. I have not heard any politician is suffering from anything. Good pay, involved in corruption, pension etc. If any one will speak against them, there are bunch of fools protecting them.

In my Opinion, Seat Belts are weak when you look at some roads conditions. Better the vehicle manufacturer replace seatbelts with steel chains....!!!! Hope this will provide more safety to the Pax,

By applying some physics ..if a car is travelling at 120 kms / hr ..Persons inside are travelling at 120 kms.. So vehicle when it hits an object without driving braking ..Or in deceleration with braking ... by inertia persons thrust forward hence all safety measures as discussed in the article .....

The recent accident was a result of overspeeding and overtaking on the wrong side; also from the start of the bridge the road suddenly gets V shaped! In a country where roads, even expressways, are not suitable for speeds of more than 100/120kmph due to various reasons, why are high end vehicles with speeds of 300kmph+being allowed to be manufactured? Also, at high speeds majority of Indian budget cars would be mangled to a piece of twisted metal then what's the use of seatbelts? None of the occupants may have survived in a head-on crash, at that speed, if it was not for the Mercedes high end rugged car even with seatbelts on?? Also, sudden implementation of such rules, like the lockdown, will lead to chaos and a chance for corrupt traffic officials to demand bribes!! Incidentally, till Rajiv Gandhi regime only cars upto 1000cc were allowed??

While it is important to wear seat belts ..all passengers front / back / rear of seats which are provided .. It it no guarantee ..to throw all caution .. drive fast etc etc Seat belts may prevent deaths but in the event of a accident can still get seriously injured incl fatalities... So all preventive measures with abundant caution while driving is to be stressed ...

Many countries does not have rear seat belt mandatory but they have speed limit for each and every express highway, but here after death of rich man (RIP) too much hue and cry, thousands of people dying day by day due to potholes, and thousands of innocent dying because of some one's fault i.e. rash driving, drunken driving over speed and lost control etc. etc. First try to rectify them and make the speed limit at express highways (I do not think express highways have speed limit) then penalize for each and every fault driving. Now a days most of the accident cases are in express highway that drivers crash cars into road dividers due to over speed/lost control.

Speed Thrills but kills -- In the USA and other western countries -- especially Germany - -Autobahn -- -- First they built the Roads of High quality -- other safety features -- gradient etc etc -- Then the Cars came -- having various features speed etc --- Here opposite -- First the Cars came and then Roads even today getting built -- to suit -- In the USA and other western nations -- any repair happening there are signs and lights - warning of repair works from Kms away -- Further USA has max speed of 120 KMS -- otherwise pulled- up by police--- So even on best of roads it is not beyond 120 kms / hr -- Germany may have on Autobahn higher speeds upto 220 + -- but road quality equally matching -- and every place there are indications/ signs --@ what speed -- we have various hazards -- Drivers -- tractors etc coming in opposite directions -- no signs -- cyclists -- 2 wheelers -- stray cattle -- dogs etc -- road narrowing as has happened in this accident of MR MISTRY -- --HEADLIGHTS BLINDING --

It seems more focus is given to protection which doesn't prevent injuries or deaths as speed limits are not provided or imposed on vehicle manufacturers. Modern high speed capable vehicles are tested only against moderate speeds within 100kms/hr while the present 2 wheelers to 4 wheelers are capable of crossing 150 to 300kms/hr speeds. Why not limit their speeds within100 for 2 wheelers & 150kms/hr for 4 wheelers? This can result in less deaths as the more speed less time for the drivers to respond when unexpected obstructions are faced at that high speed. It is claimed the lady had travelled more than 20kms within 9 minutes from the toll gate records compared to the time of accident spot.

2 things are very important -speed and distance between 2 vehicles. Better to go at a lower speed. Autobahn (Germany) - (Rita your comments awaited) which is one of the best designed highway, has seen large number of deaths. Better to be slow and safe, better late than never.

One rich mans death and so much hungama .. Need to plan well graded roads ..traffic signs ..warning signs.service roads at city junctions and highways without surprise turns and twists or a sudden one way in the middle of nowhere (glaring example is surathkal overbridge). For this to happen there should be proper project management and governance methodologies and policies in place.

This must be made compulsory but time has to be given for fixing belts in old cars... Many cars on roads may not have seat belts in optimum condition... More than cars RTO must reign in on unbuckled helmets of two wheelers... I personally feel we loose more lives on two wheelers than cars...

Seat belts are not the problem. Trucks, buses, tempos, two wheelers and other such vehicles driving in the fast lane force the cars to overtake from the left causing these accidents. The erring drivers should be penalised heavily and their licences suspended for them to learn a lesson. Until this problem is solved, accidents will keep on occuring. No point in wasting money building these highways.

Apart from the alert regarding mandatory wearing of seat belt --rear seat ---- The seat belt and air bags work in tandem -- without seat belt air bags don't activate -- -- also it has been stated by Car mfr -- safety experts --if air bags activate without seat belt it can cause more harm ----
