Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur (MS)

Kundapur, Sep 12: A woman pilgrim of Tiruvananthapuram origin who had come to visit Sri Mookambika temple at Kollur met a watery grave in Souparnika river here.

The deceased is identified as Chandi Shekharan (42). A team of 14 people had arrived from Tiruvananthapuram for pilgrimage. Fire service personnel and Kollur police are looking for her mortal remains.

In the evening, the family after offering pooja in the temple had come to the bathing ghat. Her husband Murugan and son Aditya also accompanied her. Aditya slipped and got stuck in the water current. Both Murugan and Chandi Shekharan jumped into water though they did not know how to swim. Chandi Shekharan got washed away. Murugan and Aditya were rescued by the locals.

Very sad! May her soul Rest In Peace. Mother’s ultimate sacrifice. Nowadays I read about these accidents in Mangaluru a lot. My observation is in India people neglect about life saving techniques like learning to swim and other activities.I remember many year’s ago in North India a passenger bus had fallen down from the bridge to the river due to heavy rain. All of them died except two foreigners who could swim by opening exit door.

So many such cases happening nowadays; people who don't know to swim should never venture near water bodies especially during rainy season! Temples should employ some expert professional swimmers near the bathing places to take care of drowning emergencies! The biggest irony is that the respective daivas, with due respect to them, fail to protect their ardent devotees who have just completed the holy rituals?

tragic... the practice of dipping in river is dangerous... this was relevant when devotees used to walk for days and arrive at the temple and there were no pipe or taps... now taps / bath rooms can be provided around temple with water drawn from river... devotees may use the same for washing / bath...
