Mangaluru: Young graphic designer killed in bike-tanker collision

Mangaluru, Sep 14: A bike rider died on the spot in a road accident that occurred at the main junction of Haleangadi on the NH-66.

The deceased is identified as Charanraj Shettigar (28), a resident of Pakshikere Hosakadu who worked as a graphic designer in Surathkal.

His bike came under the wheels of an Udupi-bound tanker from Mangaluru and the bike got stuck in a barricade that got dragged by the tanker for some distance near the junction.

Charanraj Shettigar's head got severely hit to the road resulting in profuse bleeding leading to his death.

Immediately, Charanraj was rushed to a private hospital.

Charanraj was on his way back home after finishing work. He was married just a year back.

Mangaluru north division traffic police have registered a case.

    Why should there be barricades on the highway? When drivers/ riders are not aware of the barricade there would be cause of an accident. Even while travelling to Bantwal from Mangalore near Adyar and many more places there are barricades placed on the roads which cannot be seen in the night and if there is mist. No warning signs that there are barricades placed on the roads. The police/RTO should be held responsible for this accident.

    Barricades are installed near highway road divers to slow down oncoming traffic as vehicles on either side of divider want to pass. since humps cannot be installed on national highway so they use temporary barricades.. only solution is to ban & terminate all unnecessary road dividers most seen on Mangalore goa highway

    Humps can't be put but national highway can have potholes as big as cricket stadiums. I've seen many accidents being caused because of these barricades. No proper sign board to indicate the placement of barricades is the reason

    One of the common reasons for death in 2 wheeler accident is head injury, which is caused by wearing low quality helmets or cos of not wearing the helmet strap.

    Senseless and reckless riding of two wheelers and four wheelers is the root cause of accidental deaths on our roads. 99 percent of the riders and drivers has non knowledge of traffic rules and road discipline. Anyhow wait until 2024 by then all our roads will be in par with roads in the USA under double engine growth Sarkar as declared by the Central Minister. Haleangadi junction is a death trap with four sides busy crossings with barricades.

    We should all protest putting the barricade without any sign board before, at least if there is sign board stating that Barricade ahead , People may take cautious steps before, a sudden unexpected barricade leads to major accidents. many times I also faced the issue of barricade.

    I too thought 100's of time whilst traveling by car from udupi to manglore the purpose of putting up barricades without police personnel checking the vehicles?.that too on highway without any intimation to drivers about barricades ahead, starting from mulki towards manglore there is barricades installed right at the center of the road at haleangadi,after crossing Surathkal flyover etc...RTO should be sued for loss of young life and road and transport ministry should be held responsible. If there is no checking what's the purpose of barricades to slow down the vehicles on highway?
