Big names on Bengaluru demolition list spark discrimination cries

Bengaluru, Sep 14 (IANS): 'What goes around comes around, comes around' aptly summarises the situation in India's silicon valley in the aftermath of the massive flooding in the city's IT quarter last week.

In an irony of sorts, many high profile developers, IT majors, hospitals figure among the encroachers allegedly responsible for choking almost 700 storm water drains (SWD), as per an internal note of the BBMP tasked with clearing up the mess.

Almost half of the encroachments comprise of houses and other structures of permanent nature, which is making the going slow.

Names of entities like Prestige, Bagmane Tech Park, Columbia Asia Hospital, Eco Space, Gopalan, Salarpuria, Wipro and Congress leader Haris Nalapad figure in the encroachers' list.

While the authorities have got into action mode, they're being accused of selective demolition by some of the parties whose properties have borne the brunt of demolition drives over the past two days.

"Instead of going after big companies, the authorities are targeting private residential properties like ours," a resident of an apartment building in Marathahalli said.

Some of the residents have approached the courts against the demolition drive. Civic authorities are unperturbed by the allegations of discrimination. On condition of anonymity, BBMP sources said that they have been instructed to go tough on all encroachments. But it's not going as fast as expected, they conceded.

Congress MLA Haris Nalapad questioned the arbitrary manner in which his school was subjected to the demolition drive. He said: "First of all there was no flooding here, and there was no storm water drain here when we purchased the property 25 years ago. So why this haste? If they issue a legal notice, we can jointly survey and check if any encroachment is there."

However, there has so far been no response from captains of industry who were raising a hue and cry over the flooding and causes behind it.

The very basic question comes here how these units got Electricity, Water connection if they are illegal? Moreover, who gave the building construction permit ? How did they register their land in the sub registrar office? Who issued Pahani? (RTC). Don't simply blame the owners. Its the corrupt government officers in BDA, BBMP, UDA are to be held responsible along with politicians. Catch them and put behind the bars....

Give 40% commission to this govt all issues will be resolved immediately with clean chit and with its activists, goondas and bhakths to shut the mouths of critics as a package deal. Meanwhile our Silicon Valley will be flown away by storm water to TN, Telangana etc to neighbouring states leaving BJP alone High and Wet in Bangalore. Chandi Chaddi.

Since when did, Prestige, Bagmane Tech Park, Eco Space, Gopalan, Salarpuria, become IT majors. They are real estate Moghuls who rent out office space to IT Majors. Please get your facts right. Dig deeper, you will find that all these guys are related to some noted politicians or crime and do not have intellectual ability to be termed as IT Majors. And yes, they will be untouched at the end of the day and you know why. Now shall we ask why a unsuccessful corporator from BJP was crying foul and blaming IT companies for the floods?

Your comments are Spot on -- Swalpa adjust Madi -- Bangalore's famous phrase -- has reached a monumental menace---- (We will reduce drain from say 15 ft to 12 ft -- then next fellow from 12 ft to 9 --etc etc --)-- When spending crores on buildings there is no basic Civil engineering -- considerations-- like of water flow etc. -- shows the enormity of the greed -- --(now some innocents --houses built with hard earned money getting demolished --)--- There is an artificial scarcity of land created along with infrastructure Bottle necks -- in Bangalore -- Outer ring road was built mainly for traffic not entering the city -- Decongest -- Vehicular movement of Trucks etc. who would go to other states-- But since this became only Road with connectivity it developed from a small mess to bigger and bigger -- Bangalore can develop all round -- 360 degrees -- unlike some cities which are on the coast or some natural barrier --
