Mangaluru: Residents protest against road widening at Kankanady-Valencia ward

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Mar 21: Residents of Kankanady Valencia ward in city protested over the issue of road widening in their ward and mayor Kavita Sanil went to them to listen to teh grievance.

Kavita promised them that she would discuss the matter at Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) meeting to be held on March 31.

The residents Patrick Albuquerque, Maxim D’Souza, Dhanaraj, Vishwanath and Nirmala speaking on behalf of residents to Daijiworld, said that they do not want the road to be widened to 9 meters at Red Building Lane in Capitanio within Kankanady-Valencia ward. They said the proposal to widen the mentioned road should be dropped immediately.

As per details available, some residents of the ward had given a petition to provide drainage facility at Red Building Lane in 2014. It was conveyed to them that the proposal was approved in a council meeting and standing committee meeting in 2016. But later when a resident of the locality applied for a licence for a new house, he was told that as the road would be widened there to 9 meters, his licence cannot be sanctioned as per plan.

Some residents sought information on the road widening proposal through Right To Information (RTI) Act on 10 October 2016. They received a reply on 29 November 2016, which said that the residents themselves had demanded for road widening in 2014 through a petition.

Upon verification, they learned that the petition submitted for the drainage was ‘doctored’ and the same was turned into a petition demanding road widening. The residents have blamed that the corporator of the ward is involved in the fraud.

Mayor Kavita Sanil said as more than 95 % of the houses in the locality will be affected if the road is widened, she will look into the problem and solve the issue as per the law.

The protest took place on Monday, March 20 and the mayor visited the place on Tuesday, March 21.

I had multiple times passed thru this area. Road , I see is already at 8 mtrs or 9 mtrs at most of the places. At certain places people have encroached and constructed their residences and these are the people who create the issues by spreading false allegations because they stand to lose their land. My humble request to all residents of the area is to see through this false pretensions and see what developments you want in the area. From time immemorial, people who have selfish motives have managed to cheat citizens and dont allow this to happen to you. If you don't support your corporator now who is trying to do good things for you, you will always remain a thing in the past. And why can't MCC do a simple survey and see whats the reality..Always check the facts before jumping from your homes and embrace streets just because a few people with ulterior selfish motives pulled wool over your eyes...Dont let others to fool you...!

It seems like protest is doing by jobless people who don't have better work at home ( Old ladies, jobless men). why don't you people get educate and think about future for sometime. Road widening will be carried out anytime in future, if not today, just bare with it for goodness of your future.
By the way Asha Dsilva is good Corporator and hard worker as well. These people (protestors) don't come up in their life and they don't even allow others to come up. when Corporator is doing something good support her to go ahead, it will be benefit to all the residents. Please always think positive.

If the road is widened , it is a benefit for you people
And how can people's vehicle pass from one side if another vehicle comes from that side? . You people are ill-literate about these things ...
And What If the drivers are WOMEN?
They Might Find It Tough While Taking Their Car Or Any Other Sort Of Vehicle .
I hope you people understand what I am trying to say
DONT DENY WHAT IS GOOD FOR YOU

My ancestral house is on that road and he road is so narrow and scary ! I always dread going on my bike to that place and the adjacent road that leads to Holy Hill. Road delevelopment will happen if not today somwhere in the near future. Why not let it happen now and spare people misery.

The problem is not with widening, but with widening to 30 feet which is unnecessary. Let them make it 6 metres.

    Hi Namratha
Yes, Simon lane is indeed very narrow and it also leads to many exits. Our lane is wider than that. There 2 cars don't even pass side by side except for at a few crevices. There widening hasn't taken place yet, probably because none of the builders have an empty plot there! Red Building lane has no exit at all. It's a loop street and doesn't need 30 feet for way...

Agree with you, land survey should be done to satisfy new comers from the lane and waste MCC money. Actually 20 years back there was only 6 feet road, people already gave their land before and that's why road now is 15 feet broad.

it is true in the entrance the road is 9 mtr upto only a 100 mtrs, afterwards the road is very narrow, due to this a single car can only pass, if in opposit side a lorry comes then it is gone case some one has to take reverse where vehecal can take it is very dangerous too,
Corporator asha has taken a initiative to widening this road upto 9 mtr, but there is a strong opposition from certen group of people for personal grugh and selfish motive, not compromising a small part of thier compund wall,
this is golden ooportunity is lost red building lane people whic will never comes once again.

If corporator has nothing to hide, then why she doctored the document which was meant for drainage. She should win the confidence of the people and then propose development. When mayor visited the spot yesterday and after listening to the grievances of red building lane people has agreed to put the lane widening project on hold. Salute to Mayor for walking the entire lane with the people.

i agree that was her mistake, she shud have clearly informed people of the lane that road is widening,
anyway if bulder is benefitted people of the lane also would have benifitted too,
who knows what rule will come tommarow if the road has to be widened as per rule then no one can object.

We all agree it was her mistake, so she should apologize to the people of this lane and continue with her responsibilities for what she is elected, unlike corporator who has resigned from her post. Also benefits for some, with loses for majority of people is not acceptable solution to any society. Any development plan has to be discussed with all and agreed. Also poor people who are losing their houses or boundaries walls should be compensated.

Road widening is required for smooth traffic flow . Cannot susutain growth with 100 year old roads . Minimum width in todays growing india should be fixed at 80 feet across India and wider for cities and highways

For those you are not familiar with this area, kindly note there is already 18 feet road in this Red Building lane for all types of vehicles to move freely. Even the road is one way so vehicles could go from one side and return to other side easily. There are on schools or any type of commercial buildings in this lane. The actual reason behind this lane widening is to help 2 to 3 persons who have purchased land in this area and want to build flats, and in order to get license for this commercial venture the requirement is 30 feet road. Current corporator is supporting these persons and ignoring the local people who have elected her as corporator. Even the writer of this article has not mentioned the name of the corporator (Asha D'silva), although it was mentioned in news channel. So no one is against the development.

Why not treat people who do not follow traffic rules as anti-nationals. If this is done then there is no need to widen any road. In most of the European countries, roads in many of the cities are narrower than mangalore. But people follow traffic discipline and are prepared to wait in que, so there is no problem. In our country, nobody has the patience to follow traffic discipline and therefore we keep on widening roads and lanes and people will park their vehicles on these widenend spaces.
If the police strictly enforce traffic discipline in mangalore, It will be a great place to live in.

In India no one wants to part one inch of their land for road widening. Even Defence ministry who have built their walls very close to the main roads within the Bangalore city area r not willing to part little of their land for road widening. They claim it is Defence Area!

When I cam to Dubai in 1975 I found only one lane and there was no traffic problem.... Now Dubai got roads of 10 lane road and still we got traffic problems...... I visit India and saw that India is same as it was in 1975 i.e. one lane, no parking facility, no footpaths, no proper drainage etc.... This is India.

This matter is not a development program. It's involved with land selling mafia. If the road is broad enough they can mint money in 50 times. By the way who wants highway roads in residential area.

Why do you think only land Mafia will be benefited out of this ? What about the people protesting out there , wouldn't their land value increase if the road is widened? These people are just like crabs in bucket. These people don't want to see people living uphill coming up in life or coming out of difficulty. This is purely a greedy move blocking the development agenda.
Whether the land acquired is fr drain line or for road both are for development of society not individual. Every one is in win win situation if this happens.

    Satish,

    Your comment is preposterous.

Roads need to be constructed as per certain standards. If you drop below those standards we will have dangerous roads that can lead to deaths or motorist as well as pedestrians. Also bad roads make law enforcement difficult and that leads to the difficulty in drilling discipline into the drivers. Most, if not all roads in Mangalore are below standards.
