Mangaluru: St Aloysius College witnesses historic year of growth

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jun 8: St Aloysius College (SAC) (Autonomous), Mangaluru has a history of 137 years and today a student can study from LKG to PhD in the campus. This year (2016-2017) has been particularly significant for SAC, as the College was ranked 44th among Indian colleges in the National Institutional Ranking Framework. In Karnataka, the first rank was bagged by another Jesuit College – St Joseph’s College of Commerce, Bengaluru, while the second rank went to SAC.

What is also significant is that the College had received 3.62 grade points out of 4 in the NAAC accreditation three years back, a feat not many colleges have achieved. Also, the College has received the 'Star Status' given by the department of biotechnology, government of India. Such a status has been granted to just 16 colleges in India and it is indeed a matter of great pride that SAC is one of them.

Post-graduate study

SAC was the first college in Mangaluru to start post-graduate studies outside university, with the beginning of MCA 20 years ago. Today the College boasts of 17 post-graduate courses under various disciplines. They are: MCom, MBA, MA English, economics, journalism and mass communication, corporate psychology, MSW, MSc biotechnology, chemistry, analytical chemistry, physics, mathematics, food science and technology, biochemistry, software technology, bio-informatics, and MCA.

The strength of the Post-graduate Centre of SAC is the experienced and research oriented faculty, state of the art laboratories, library with a vast collection of books and journals, well equipped studio, Community Radio Sarang etc. Campus placements enable students to find jobs even as they are studying; educational tour at every departmentis yet another attractive feature that helps students widen their horizons. There are also hostel facilities for outstation students. Of course, deserving students are given scholarships.

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Kaushal Kendra

It is yet another feather in the cap of SAC that it was recognised as a Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Kaushal Kendra by the central government, one of just two colleges to secure this status in Karnataka. Through this centre, the College has been granted funds to establish three courses: Retail management; food processing and engineering; and pharmaceutical chemistry.

In fact, the College has also been granted to start a community college where two important job oriented courses are being conducted. They are: Computer animation and multi-media; and travel and tourism. These courses can be availed by those who have passed or failed SSLC and PUC.

The College has just recently constructed an Olympics size (50 metre) swimming pool which has become a popular destination for swimming enthusiasts. It is the first swimming pool in Mangaluru and the third in the state to put in place ozonised water purifying technology. The pool has been able to create waves among Mangalureans within a short span of time.

Just a few seats left in PG courses

Those who have completed their graduation have a golden opportunity to study post-graduation at SAC. Just a few seats are available in some of these disciplines: MA English, journalism and mass communication, corporate psychology, MSW, MSc biotechnology and biochemistry.

So hurry up and get an admission at SAC for a bright future.

When most of the private aided colleges are struggling to exist due to the lack of strength, it is heartening to know that SAC is growing.

Extremely happy to note that My Alma Mater is in the news. I had my entire education from lower middle school to college at the hands of the Jesuit Father of sacred memory. I had the privilege of proposing the centenary toast in the year 1980. On this occasion only one of my past teachers was present - Mr. Panduranga Pai.

It is always a pleasure for me retrace my steps to my Alma Mater whenever time permits.

    God bless SAC
