Mangaluru, Jan 9: Under the smart city initiative, hi-tech markets are being constructed at key locations across Mangaluru, including Urwa, Alake, Mallikatte, Kankanady, and the Central Market. However, the progress of these projects has been slow, raising concerns among stakeholders.

While temporary markets were initially set up to accommodate vendors, these arrangements have become permanent for many shopkeepers. Despite the ongoing construction of markets in Kankanady, Mallikatte, and the Central Market, the hi-tech markets in Urwa and Alake remain mostly unoccupied, causing increasing dissatisfaction.

Urwa Market, intended to cater to vendors selling fish, vegetables, fruits, and rations, now houses several government offices instead. Despite issuing multiple tenders for the development of Urwa and Alake markets, a lack of interest from contractors has stalled progress.

During a pre-budget meeting on January 8, activist Hanumanth Kamath raised concerns about the condition of Urwa Market, demanding a thorough review.

Corporator Naveen D’Souza commented, “The hi-tech Kankanady Market, built at a cost of Rs 41 crore, is expected to be completed by mid-February. Tenders will be invited soon, and efforts will be made to operationalize it promptly.”

Mayor Manoj Kumar added, “The construction of both the Central Market and Kankanady Market is ongoing. Kankanady Market is expected to be completed by June or July. Shopkeepers’ demands to relocate to Urwa Market will be addressed by the end of this month. Alake Market is also facing similar challenges.”
