Gorakhpur tragedy: Social activist files PIL in Allahabad HC

Lucknow, Aug 16 (IANS): Social activist Nutan Thakur on Wednesday filed a PIL in the Allahabad High Court with regard to the death of over 60 children at a Gorakhpur hospital last week, seeking a judicial probe into the tragedy.

As per the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the HC's Lucknow bench, the Uttar Pradesh government and its agencies were trying to deny facts coming out in the media about the deaths occurring due to oxygen shortage at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital in Gorakhpur, which gives out the message that they were trying to hide facts and shield the guilty.

Thakur said she had sought a judicial inquiry in the matter so that the facts emerge and the guilty do not go unpunished.

She said she represents a "large cross-section of people who believe that the inquiry commission under the state Chief Secretary will only toe the official line taken so far".

Her plea also sought strict implementation of an earlier High Court order on a complete ban on private practice by government doctors.
