Sr Mary John Monteiro (86), of the Congregation of The Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross (SCSC), daughter of the late Hilary Monteiro & the late Carmine Fernandes, sister of Sr Ilaria, the late John / the late Lynette, Sr Mary James, Philip/ the late Gracy, Letitia / the late Eric, the late Charles / Cynthia, aunt of Prima, Preeth, Suman, Mohan, Priya, Sushanth, Divya and Deepak, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

Funeral cortege leaves Holy Cross Convent, Merlapadav, Neermarga, Mangalore for St Joseph the Worker Church, Neermarga, on Friday, May 8 at 3.45pm. Mass at 4.00 pm.

their family is from Byarikodi, near Kalpane. Though not related, family was known, being then Parishioners of Infant Jesus Church, Modankap. John was known to me, when he was with L & T, Bombay and his brother Philip, then working for Shipping Corp. They all studied in S.V.S.High School, Bantwal, as that was the only High school then available to us. May her soul Rest in Peace. Our condolences to Monteiro family.

Sr. Mary John Monteiro, affectionately known to all of us as “Gethru Bai” (short for Gertrude), hailed from a deeply devout and respected family from Bantwal. Though we were not related by blood, our families shared a close bond rooted in affection and our common hometown ties. Her mother, Catherine, was known for her piety and gentle nature, while her father, Hilary (“Ilar Aab”), was a man held in great esteem by all who knew him. Sr. Mary John dedicated her entire life to God and to the service of humanity. She touched the hearts of myriads of students during her dedicated religious life. With her passing, we have lost an exemplary religious sister whose presence brought comfort, wisdom, and grace to so many. We extend our heartfelt and prayerful condolences to the Monteiro family during this time of profound grief. May the Lord grant Sr. Mary John eternal rest and peace, and may her soul shine forever in God’s heavenly light. — The Frank Family- Loretto/Mangalore
