from Dr Eugene D’Souza, Moodubelle
Fr. Lawrence Fernandes (73) passed away at 2 am on Wednesday, 24th February 2010 at Fr. Muller’s Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital on 22nd February 2010 as he was feeling uneasy with chest pain. Besides he had been suffering from extreme form of diabetics.
Born on 6th January 1937 at Shankerpura (Pangala) to late Antony and Mary Fernandes, after his initial education at Pangala Fr. Lawrence completed SSLC from the Innanje High School and joined St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore. He was ordained a priest in 1962. Thereafter, he served as the assistant parish priest at Bendoor and Belathangady for two years each and at Valencia for few months before proceeding to Rome for doctoral studies. Fr. Lawrence acquired doctorate for his thesis on Moral Theology.
After returning from Rome, Fr. Lawrence worked in the Bishop’s House for some time and was later appointed as the Director of Mangala Jyothi-Diocesan Catechetical, Biblical and Liturgical Centre where he served for nearly 8 years. During this period, under his initiative new books on catechism and collection new hymns were published.
In 1990, Fr. Lawrence was sent to the Rosario cathedral as the Dean. Later, he was appointed as the parish priest and Dean of the Infant Jesus Parish at Modankap (Bantwal). Meanwhile, Fr. Lawrence became a victim of diabetics and went on sick leave in 1995. Later, he was appointed as the parish priest of St. Joseph’s Seminary Church, Jeppu where he served for two years. As the diabetics became too severe, Fr. Lawrence had to suffer the loss of one of his legs which was amputated in 2001.
Fr. Lawrence never allowed his disability to hamper his spiritual or priestly functions. He volunteered to teach in St. Joseph’s Seminary, Jeppu which he did till the last breath of his life. He was a very good teacher of Philosophy and also a spiritual guide and counsellor to many of the seminarians. Fr. Lawrence was a great orator and his sermons have been appreciated by one and all.
Fr. Lawrence had touched many people who had come in his contact throughout his priestly life. He never manifested his sufferings in any way. He always kept a smiling face and would always joke about the disease from which he was suffering. He spent most of his time in reading new books on spirituality. When i met him in December 2009, he said that the books give him company and he feels that time is not sufficient as there is much to learn. Pointing to a bundle of Christmas Greeting cards on his table, Fr. Lawrence further said that he believed in personally sending the greeting cards by writing the names and addresses of his relatives, friends and well wishers as at least once a year the bond is renewed. These were indeed noble thoughts of Fr. Lawrence in the age of impersonal internet and SMS greetings.
Helping the needy was the second nature of Fr. Lawrence. In whichever parish he had served, Fr. Lawrence is still remembered with affection and respect. He had endeared to his parishioners by his dedicated service and friendly and helping nature.
Fr. Lawrence is survived by his only sister-Juliana Mathias, nephews-Andrew and Bernard and nieces-Winifred and Lavina and their families.
The funeral of Fr. Lawrence Fernandes will be held tomorrow (25th February 20100 at St. Vincent de Ferrar Church, Valencia.

Thu, Feb 25 2010Fr. Lawrence's death is a great loss for our Community at St. Joseph's Seminary. Though he was confined to his room most of the time, he attracted many to himself by his smiling face and cheerfulness even in teh midst of continuous sufferings. I had first seen him at the Rosario Cathedral during his Silver Jubilee Mass. I was deeply inspired by his personality there. Since one and a half year, I felt him still closer in this house. Whenever I visited him, he used to send me back with full of warmth and love. I used to forget all my worries after hearing him. Indeed, I have seen a living witness to the Gospel in him. I miss him, his smile and his loving words. He lives on in the hearts of many. He is alive in God and in our midst. He inspires many even now beyond space and time. Fr. Lawrence thank you for your loving company to me and to all our inmates in the seminary. Pray for us to live our life with faith, joy, serenity, peace and love.
Your Loving,
Fr. Antony Pito.

Thu, Feb 25 2010My heartfelt condolences on "Fr. Lawry's" passing to his family and friends all over the world. I had the good fortune of visiting him in Rome while he was studying there. To a 21-year old with not much knowledge of the sacred sites in Rome, he patiently became a tour guide, even showing me the best place to pose for a picture in front of a cathedral or monument! His sense of humor and patience endeared him to everyone. May he rest in peace! Indeed we have lost a wonderful priest who has been a model to everyone.

Thu, Feb 25 2010Tribute
What you think of yourself is nmore important than what otheres think of you.
Fr. Lawrece, was deeply rooted in Christ, and strengthened by his prayer. His strong Christian faith and tested convictions made him carry out jis duties faithfully as a sacred trust,. Over the years Fr. Lawrence Fernandes had helped many people by his availability and listening ear when they were in trouble.,and distress.
I was reference for this for the last ten years or so. Life was a gift of God to him 73 years ago. What he had made of it by his dedication and service to all specially by his teaching to the Josephite seminarians, in spite of his weak health. He was a rare gift bestowed by the Almighty. My humble attempt to say a BIG THANK YOU to a Father loving and kind though words are inadequate to convey my heartfelt feelings. Father Lawrence with a Human heart, , was a Gem of Inspiriation. He was generouz, shrewed and very compassionate priest.

Thu, Feb 25 2010I deeply mourn for the death of Fr. Lawrence, due to his short illness. He was beloved to me, he had consoled many times by his spiritual advice. He had taught me the real patience in my life. I was very much impressed by his consoling words of advice to me whenever I went for his guidance in my dress. Even in his illness he taught the Seminarians and never took sufficient rest. He was trusting in God always and His love. His Homilies were so meaningful and heart touching. He had suffered a lot and during all the time he believed Gods strength and helping hand on him. and he became courageous. May God grant him eternal rest.

Thu, Feb 25 2010It is shocking very difficult to learn that amcho mogall Appi Padryam is no more. My family and myself closely associated with Fr. Appi and everytime I went to Mangalore made a point to visit him. When he was the director of Mangalajhothi I visited him many times to consult on many youth related issues and he was a constance guidance to me and my friends back in Pangla in those days. He was such a great personality, a great preacher and yet very gentle and humble. I offer my sincere and heartfelt condolences to our dear Jillamausi, Vinnie, Andrew, Benna and Lavina and pray May his soul rest in peace

Thu, Feb 25 2010A great priest indeed! When he took over our parish, on his first visit to the families he gave a Prayer to the Holy Family to be recited daily during the Rosary which is said even today. During his tenure our children Loy and Lancy joined the Society of Jesus and used to enquire about them. Immediately after Loy`s untimely demise he sent a beautiful consoling message to us and extended his help for his souvenir. Inspite of his ill-health he was all cheerfulness whenever we met him. May his noble soul rest in peace.

Wed, Feb 24 2010It is indeed sad to know that Fr.Lawrence is no more.I was living in a rented house as a medical student close to Rosario cathedral in 1990,when he was a parish priest then.Though there was no sermen in the morning masses,Fr.Lawrence used to give us some tips and a few minutes of reflection based on that days scripture.I loved those biblical versions which were so meaningful to me.I never missed a single oppurytunity to attend the morning mass...I am so sad to know he is no more here,But I am sure he is with JESUS for ever.

Wed, Feb 24 2010IN THIS YEAR DEDICATED TO THE PRIESTS, THOSE WHO KNOW FR LAWRENCE FERNANDES, CERTAINLY SAY THAT, HE WAS AN IDEAL PRIEST. THE PRIEST TO BE IMITATED. THE QUALITIES OF A PRIEST SAID IN PASTORE DABO VOBIS IS VERY MUCH VISIBLE. . FR LAWRENCE WAS A HOLY, HUMBLE, SIMPLE AND A MAN FOR OTHERS.ONE HAS TO APPRECIATE HIS TOLERANCE EVEN AT LONG SUFFERING. HE WAS LOVED WHEREEVER HE WENT. WE SHOULD APPRECIATE THE RECTOR, STAFF, STUDENTS AND THE WORKERS OF ST JOSEPH SEMINARY WHO LOOKED AFTER HIM SO NICELY FOR THE LAST SO MANY YEARS.
MAY THE SOUL OF FR LAWRENCE FERNANDES REST IN PEACE.

Wed, Feb 24 2010With the death of Fr. Lawrence Fernandes Mangalore diocese has lost a great and exemplary priest. He was gentle, intelligent, a good preacher and well loved by one and all. I believe he is the third ordained priest of Pangla Parish (the first two being the late Fr. Thomas D’sa and Archbishop Alphonse Mathias). And we, specially the priests and the Seminarians of Pangla parish, had high regards for him. Many of us probably were inspired to join the seminary because of our contact with such good priests like Fr. Lawrence. I am proud to say that he was the Master of Ceremonies at my priestly ordination in 1984. Just two months ago I was privileged to concelebrate with him at the Wedding mass of his grand niece and my cousin’s daughter Prima. God has called him to eternal home in this year when we celebrate the year of Priests. As I express my condolences to his family, friends and the diocese of Mangalore, I pray that Jesus the eternal priest grant him the joys of heaven and through his prayers many more be inspired to become good and holy priests.
