JD(S) leader C M Ibrahim's 'gol gappa sellers' comment adds to Hindi Day row

Bengaluru, Sep 15 (IANS): Janata Dal-Secular's Karnataka state chief C M Ibrahim sparked a fresh controversy on Hindi Day on Wednesday with his remarks comparing Hindi speakers to 'gol gappa' sellers.

Speaking to reporters, Ibrahim criticised Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai over the alleged attempts by the BJP-led Central government to impose Hindi language in Karnataka.

"Bommai is promoting Hindi with our money. We will not allow the imposition of Delhi language in our state," he said.

Over the past few days, the issue of Hindi Day celebrations in Karnataka have gradually raised political heat. JD-S leader and former Chief Minister Kumaraswamy had earlier written to Bommai urging him not to organise Hindi Day celebrations in the state.

On Wednesday, Ibrahim went a step further. "We don't need to learn Hindi and go to north India to sell gol gappas. All these people from Gujarat and Hindi states come here to sell pani puri," he said.

While there have been no reactions as yet to Ibrahim's comments, observers feel that the Hindi language issue may not rouse passions to the extent it does in neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

    HIndi can at best be a link language .. One has mother tongue ..primary .. Then English ... Whether we like it or not English is spoken nation wide... whether good English or bad .. does not matter .. all official correspondence..English ..books .. legal etc ..International for Indians it is the most practical ..English ... Lot of academics .. university .. work abroad .. if one has knowledge of English better placed .. Some hypocrites may object .. .. but it is obvious bjp leaders put their children in best of schools .. colleges .. international studies .. work abroad .. all English ..

    as per pigbrain of godse admirers, "hindi hindu is hindustan, baaki sab pakistan"...even the hindi they are trying to impose is highly sanskritised, all urdu, persian/arabic words which became part of hindi over the years have been replaced with sanskrit words... from hindi belt all monkeyvotebank is migrating to non-hindi states in search of bread and butter... they should learn the state language to where they migrate for breadcrumbs.... high time to move to 2 language formula throughout India (English + state language)...

    Languages should be left to the people to adapt. Govt. has no business spending tax money to propagate any language other than the local ones! For majority of Hindi speakers we are all just "Madrasi" people. If love/ like Hindi, great!, but don't buy into Hindi imposition/ propagation funded by your own money. We need to support our local languages and our border languages.

    Who is imposing Hindi The annual celebration of Hindi Diwas commemorates September 14, 1949, the day when the Constituent Assembly of India took the decision to make Hindi the official language of the Union government Hindi is very easy to learn. learning any language is not bad our children should learn Hindi and English Third class politicians creating nonsense

    one should know enough hindi to converse with paani puri, istri, janitors, cart vendors of low quality vegetables/fruits, paan, chana packet, bhutta sellers... etc. etc.

    This is a useless debate.... Total waste of time... Hindi has already made a place as communication language of Indians... There is no need to specially impose it... Every language is beautiful... One who hates any language can not love anyone...

    The language issue is another mischief getting revived by ruling dispensation -- Overall, as per 2011 census --- Although Hindi is the most widely spoken language in the country, almost six in every 10 people, or 56.37% of the citizens, do not identify it --HINDI --as their first language or mother tongue, --- Many BJP leaders' children -- study and work abroad -- this is all for gullible masses -- enough agitations -- madras riots etc. have taken place and a consensus reached-- Failures on economy -- poverty etc. etc. makes the ruling dispensation new ways to divert -- This is not a most pressing issue-- RECALLING WORDS OF CN ANNADURAI -- FORMER CHIEF MIN _ TAMILNADU -- HINDI AGITATIONS _--- "It is claimed that Hindi should be the common language because it is spoken by the majority. Why should we then claim the tiger as our national animal instead of the rat which is so much more numerous? Or the peacock as our national bird when the crow is ubiquitous?”

    Karnataka is the only state in south India apart from parts of andhra pradesh which is just nodding its head to the imposition of hindi....tamilnadu and kerala will never allow that...as ibrahim rightly said most of the northies seen here sell gol guppas or work in saloons...while no one should be criticised based on their profession, the imposition of hindi is already seen in a certain bank in dk and udupi where the names are written in hindi in locker ledger...the local elderly clerks about to be retired are unable to read the same..i had this exprience a month ago...changu and mangu and the nagpur chaddis have bigger plans....only resistance will keep them at bay..like how they utterly failed in terms of farmer act as well as implementation of CAA
